savage striker bolt locked

My savage striker has broken a bolt head retaining pin for the second time locking the action tight. What's left of the pin has gotten out into the bolt race and tied up the bolt . I have removed the trigger group and can see the pin but cannot get it back in the hole. Last time some wiggling and jiggling got it back, not this time. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you talking about the pin designated 12A in the Savage striker parts explosion? ....... Just google it for confirmation.............. Is the bolt now stuck or still able to slide?

actually I should have said the bolt head retaining pin broke for the second time. The end of the pin is wedged in the bolt rail and the edge of the hole locking the bolt so it will not open.

Actually I should have said the bolt head retainer pin broke . It is sticking out into the race way cut in the receiver locking bolt in place. It appears to be wedged on the edge of the hole and the race way.

The bolt will not open far enough to remove the handle.Haven't pulled the barrel yet.not sure if the bolt head will come out the front of the receiver or not.The bolt handle only moves less than 1/4th in. upward.

Bummer :(.................. Lets make sure we're all on the same page. Is the Pin we're talking about black & located just to the rear of the front Baffle?? #2 Have you changed your bolt head recently?

As soon as you remove the barrel it should let the bolt move forward enoug to remove the handle . Larry
Larry, I believe he's saying he can't lift the bolt out of the machined cut in the receiver far enough to remove the bolt handle which must be slid to the rear to remove....

I am not much of a send it back guy.. But there must be a problem if it keeps reoccurring so maybe send it back???
Seems to me there have been reports that a slew of the pins mentioned were heat treated to the point of being too brittle. The pin has a hole in it where the firing pin slides through and that's where they failed. If Savage let the pins get into the market place they should make it right.

Originally savage had an indent in the bolt body and a cut recess in the bolt head , I don't know why they eliminated that . Marlin and Rem 783 still use it . I know Rem 783 and Marlin are the same basic rifle .

If you remove the bolt handle retaining screw/bolt, you should be able to roll it back and out of the action slot. The action is held in the stock by screws?? Pull the action!!

I did pull the action and the bolt handle fits into a milled safety slot in the back of the receiver, bolt will not lift even half what is needed to clear. Pulled the trigger group to get the loaded round out of the mag and to get better access to the bottom of the action. No luck the broken pin is lodged on the edge of the hole and the bolt guide slot in the side of the action. Can't get a piece of ten thousandth brass shim stock in between pin and receiver rail. Pulled the barrel and still no go . Bad as I hate to it will go back to Savage then if they ruin the bolt getting it out it will be there dime. This is the second pin broken in this gun and no I don't dry fire this gun without snap caps in place.

It doesn't just push out,it is wedged tight by the broken retainer and will have to be driven out .It will scratch ,mar the bolt and or the receiver when forced out.

This is exactly why I would send it back with a note telling them this is not the first time this has happened and it needs to stop.. Plus if there is a problem, that's how they figure it out. I hate to send a gun back but sometimes it's a must... They have been good to me even when I called and told them I cut off a screw in a scope mount twice and its still to short..lol

They not only sent the replacement screw for free they sent all four and a new scope base.. That's not bad C/S becouse it was totally my fault..

I have so many savages and have never heard of this problem ever. I feel bad for you having to go through this but in this case I would send it back with a detailed description of the problem. There are 2 pins one for the small firing pin and one for the later one which is larger yet. Try a deadblow on the opposite side of the broken pin to drive it in using inertia. Hold the receiver in your hand and rap it a couple times and try again till it goes in enough to move the darn bolt. I have used this technique on other pins to move them back into a hole and it worked.
