Savage Straight-Pull Action

Savage has a video out for it's new Straight-Pull action. Ball bearing lock up similar to the Blaser (?). Might be just the ticket for Match Rifle bolt guns for High Power. Looks as if it cycles quickly!

Saw it last year in pre production. Very slick. Might be a good option for the PRS folks that like to get back on target quick. It is a very well thought out design for sure.

Jim,
Running a bolt gun in XC rapid fire (10rds / 60sec. Sitting, 10rds / 70sec Prone) is completely different than riding bags. Shooter is slung up and butt remains in the shoulder, other than the reload.

Casual observations...

Very cool that the bolt can be switched out from one side to the other.

Also cool that the bolt handle angle can be adjusted by the user.

It is basically 9 pound gun without a scope. Deal breaker for me. YMMV

On the video I watched, the guy was pulling the gun away from his shoulder to cycle it indicating it is either a bit difficult to work or he just wasn't used to it.

Time will tell if this gun is accepted by the public.

I had a Schmidt Rubin for a short while with the straight pull, it was ok not great. Maybe this will be different.

Im afraid I have too many years on a M70 to switch. My Browning T-bolt and my brothers Anschutz Fortner biathlon 22's are the exception.
I have shot K-31's several times, and they are strange (to me) to operate.

I did a little work back in the day on what was referred to as
the poor mans assault rifle. It was the Remington 760 pump
using a WW2 vintage BAR magazine. This bolt system would
be interesting in a true tube chassis with forward grip pump.
Nothing in your face, and minimal hand movement, other then
the stroke.

Watched a couple different videos on the rifle. To see it looks like you have to yank pretty hard. Also seem s like the bolt comes back far enough to "bonk" you on the nose with that big bolt tang assembly if you don't "get out of it' a little bit.

Looking at the expanded drawings and internal workings of the bolt shows me some linkage and all those "balls' that must swivel, retract and link together in operation.

One thing I did like was the bolt handle not coming up to make clearance for you hand against the scope a bit of a compromise. Your hand can stay below the scope through the entire operation.

There are lots of videos out there. One shows the inside mechanism of the bolt and how it cams things open. The bolt is not a simple thing in this model.

I have always wanted a right feed left eject left hand savage. This may be an easy way to get and modify one. The aluminum receiver would be easy to modify for an ejection port. Heck I could probably draw one up and make one easily. I just wonder what the bolt head is like.
