SAVAGE RIFLE GALLING CARTRIDGE UPON EXTRACTION

jonbearman

I live in new york state, how unfortunate !
CAN ANYBODY TELL ME WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY SAVAGE.i MODIFIED IT WITH A SHILEN SELECT MATCH BARREL IN 22-250 ACKLEY IMPROVED. After I fire it ,I try to extract the case and the reciever or whatever is cutting into the side of the case.I cant find any burrs. Is my factory ejector spring to heavy for the blown out case or what. These rounds I load are very conservative. No bolt sticking or anything like that. Can you give me suggestions where to find a lighter ejector spring. Sorry about the caps,my lock was on.

Numrich gun parts show an ejector spring for $1.70. I know they can be had at other place's, just can't remember where. If it comes to me I'll post it.

Post a picture of an example of the brass after this has happened to it. Maybe it'll help identify what's going on.

My Savage Model 12 F-class in 6mmBr was really scratching the cases badly upon extraction. I removed the extractor and the problem was solved. The rifle is a single shot so this really was not an inconvenience. My 6.5x284 did not have the problem.

The ejector is the problem. It has such a stiff spring that it forces the case up against the inside of the receiver. I have both removed the ejector from my single-shot Savages, and taken a turn or two off the spring with good results.

The other option is to polish the edges of the receiver channel on the side it extracts to, many are rather sharp and the cases will 'catch' near the shoulder on firm bolt cycles.

I did the deburr ,polish job and when I go out with the gun I will let you know.Statically it seems to work. Thanks so much for all the imfo, everyone and the pm's. Jon
