Savage rebarrel.

I have a Savage Model 10 Top Bolt Release, Stagger feed, blind mag 223 with a Model 12 heavy Varmint barrel on it that I am contemplating rebarreling. It has served me very well but the barrel is just getting tired. The action and trigger on this are a dream which is why I want to keep it.

I am for now looking at another 223 barrel with a fast twist to shoot 80gr bullets or maybe moving to a 22ARC to shoot these heavier bullets. Considering that I have in-house a large supply of 75, 77 and 80gr bullets already that will not shoot in the 1:9 factory barrel.

I love shooting the 223 and just did so again the other day but I am also curious and impressed with what I now an seeing in the 22ARC. Also I am now shooting a 6ARC bolt rifle and am finally getting it figured out as to what it likes and needs.

Chambering for either is not an issue as again this is already a 223 and I also have a Savage bolt head for the ARC that I can swap out.

Thoughts?

Tes You Can.

223 is great for cheap and plentiful brass. Arc will have more speed, better for very long shots. Put it in a ballistic calculator and see what the difference is worth to you.

I have a 28" 7tw 223, impressive what it can do with the heavies. I built it for a local 600yd FTR competition. (still haven't been)

All basically for target sports out to 300yds and shooting at 1/2MOA size targets and smaller from a bench.

The Model 12 barrel is a 26", 1:9 twist, Varmint. It did very well with 69gr bullets though it did struggle a bit at 300yds trying to hit 1" X-rings.

Looking at the 22 because bullets are cheaper than 6mm and as we know that is the costliest component. Both use pretty much the same powders, only with the 6 ARC liking LeverEvolution.

As for brass, I quit picking up range brass for my 223 and now just use Norma brass when I can get it. Haven't tried Starline yet.

The Barrel on my 6ARC is a Shilen 28", 4 groove, 1:7.5 twist, Bull, Match Select. Off the shelf from NSS.

So my thinking is an off the shelf 22ARC or a 223 in much the same configuration with maybe just a 26" barrel.

Got a 7 twist 223 with ISSF chamber from Brad at Urban
It is Amazing with the 85.5 Bergers
It killed a pile of PD's out to 535 yards with the 53g Vmax
If I did it again I would go with 3/4 thread up front vs the pencil 5/8ths deal but that barrel shoots really well and has since the start--and you get all of his knowledge and experience for free
Plus he is site sponsor

Thanks folks. I have no doubts that every one of the barrels mentioned are terrific. That is not the issue. just cannot seem to settle on which chambering to proceed with.

Again, I have 3 years experience shooting the 223 at these targets. Question in my mind is either a 7, 7.5, or 8 twist 223 or a 7.5 twist 22ARC.

The cost of new brass for either is for practical purposes a wash. The 223 used slightly less powder and they will both use the same bullets. Which currently I have 500 80gr SMK, 300 75gr Hornady, 200 75gr Berger, 300 69gr Barnes Match Burners and 300 Nosler 69gr Custom Competition sitting on the shelf.

Unsure how much more effective the added velocity of the ARC will be over the 223. Would kind of like to try the ARC just to see.

Getting arc brass might still be hard to do. I know starline is making 6arc just don’t know how often

I would think 200 will last the life of the barrel if they are not run hot.
Piece of cake, for the 6mm I already have that in Starline and twice that in Hornady. Starline has right now available both 6mm ARC and 6.5 Grendel in 250, 500 and 1k quantities. While all 223 is now backordered.

That is good to know.

Get both barrels! Easy to change as needed. I have a rack of barrels for my savages.
If funds were available that would certainly be an option. Unfortunately for now it would have to be one or the other. Though in this sport barrels are consumables!

DLT. Something like you mentioned, the 22 ARC would be a good one, Or compare it to the 224 Valkyrie, this might suit you. Either would be fine for what you want to try in something new and the heavies.

If you want a little more velocity over a .223 go with a .223 AI. I used Northland Shooter to source a Criterion 1 in 7" twist, 28" long barrel chambered for the Berger 80 grain. I also purchased all of the items to do my own install from Northland. I'm very pleased with the result.
