Savage rebarrel

hello to all. my first post here.

I am looking at re-barreling my Savage 10 FCP-SR .308 rifle. already changed the factory stock to an XLR Industries chassis system. (way better than the Accustock). the rifle still has the stock Savage action. i do hand load.

the rifle is used in among friends in informal competition and my enjoyment of precision shooting. I would love to put a Krieger or equivalent on it, but the wait time and cost are turning me off to that option. also, even though Savage barrels can be changed by the end user, i will still probably use a local gunsmith to do the change, adding to the cost. and, does it make sense to put a high end barrel on a standard Savage action?

so, I have been looking at pre fits and semi custom barrels from Criterion and McGowen. both seem to have a good rep, but wait time is usually much longer with the Criterion from Northland Shooting Supply. McGowen's Barrel Outlet is showing about 3 weeks on a semi custom barrel.

So, for all you experienced and knowledgeable guys out there, which barrel offers the likelihood of the best accuracy in this price range?

any input appreciated

I've had good success with both but give the edge to CBI. Call Jim for availability because he keeps many on the shelf and receives shipments often.

I started with a home brew Bench rest gun using a Savage PTA and a pre-fit barrel. I graduated to gunsmith fit barrels. That is so as most gunsmiths have no experience chambering for a barrel nut and dis-trust them. However, my original gun did very well and there is another shooter here in Sacramento that does real well with a number of pre-fits. I think the pre-fits don't get enough respect!

I use my Savage actions with a CBI barrels in f-class competitions ...they shoot GREAT! McGowan list barrels in stock but they take 4-6 weeks to get one. Jim at Northland supply is Great to deal with and has plenty of barrels in stock. I have bought 4 barrels from Jim and they all shot Great! My 2 cents.... go with a creiterion barrel from Jim At northland supply...you will be a happy camper!

Look up www.gunshack.com. I've had nothing but good luck with their barrels and I have it from helotes tx to my house in 3 days

thanks for all the responses. still considering my options, but i am leaning toward a Criterion from NSS at this point

When I bought my first barrel from Jim at Northland Shooters Supply, he said he would walk me thru the barrel replacement if I gave him a call when I was ready to start. After service like that and five barrels later, I'm still a big fan of Jim's. Great Guy to deal with.

Another vote for Jim at NSS. Helped me put together a killer 284WIN on a standard shelf savage LA and a Criterion prefit . That guns shoots way better than any other gun I have, and cost less than a grand to spin together. It also feels real nice to know you put the gun together when those groups settle in. Good luck

i decided to go with the Criterion barrel. i also purchased a savage target action and going build on that with the Criterion. hoping it's a shooter!!

You will not be disappointed! My criterion shoot excellent! Let us know how it goes.

Jim is a good guy to deal with. I would give CBI a shot if I were you.

It is my understanding that CBI and Krieger are NOT the same company.

Update on my Savage Re-barrel project.

I went with a Criterion 28 inch bull contour pre fit .308 barrel. Instead of using the original Savage action, I installed it in a Savage Target Action and a XLR Industries chassis system. Glass is a Sightron SIII 8-32x56.

I used the original Savage short action to build up a budget .223 built around another Criterion pre-fit.

anyways, pretty happy with the Criterion .308 barrel. at 100 yards, when i do my part (not as often as i would like) I am seeing .21" to .3" 5 shot groups with Berger 150 gr HPBT flat base bullets on top of either Varget or RE-15. 168 and 175 gr SMK's are giving around a half inch or a bit less.

I will finally get a chance to shoot it at 300 yds this weekend. anxious to see how it does there. next month, a road trip to a 600 to 1000 yd range is in the offing. we will see how it goes there as well...........................

Please investigate before you post:

Criterion Barrels, Inc. was started in 1999 from Krieger Barrels, Inc. in response to demands of rifle builders and firearms manufacturers for quality match grade barrels at a lower cost. Initially began as a division of Krieger, Criterion is now completely independent with a separate facility, personnel, and ownership.
