savage question also

want to change one of my savages to a 6.5-06. have a 243 and a 7mm rem mag both in target action. just how difficult will it be? honestly? what do i need to buy? which gun? hoping the 7mm rem mag. need a new barrel and bolt right? what else?

Toby,
Please forgive me, but aren't you trying to go from a short to long action any way you look at it please?

7mm is built with a savage target action. You have to fire the round to get the round out or you have to remove the bolt. doesn't bother me. it's a single shot anyway.

The .243 would be easier to change out, since you can keep the same bolt head. If you change out the 7mm Rem. Mag., you just need a bolt head assembly (procedure here: http://www.savageshooters.com/index.php?articleview=Savage%20Bolt%20Head%20Swap ($12 membership required to view))

All you need are:
  • A new large shank (1.120" x 20tpi thread diameter) barrel, see http://savageshooters.com/SavageForum/index.php/topic,513.0.html for more information
  • A "go" headspace gauge, I use a Manson because they have a notch for the ejector so you don't have to remove it
  • A barrel nut wrench, and
  • An action wrench (I have this one: http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=710783, Brownells sells a similar) or a barrel vise (http://www.sinclairintl.com/.aspx/cid=5578/Products/Barrel_Vises_Wrenches, I use the Davidson)
  • Torque wrench (recommended)

It's pretty easy, I have 3 Savages and have put on/replaced the barrels on all of them myself. Here's what you do

  • Take off old barrel (either put barrel in vise and/or action in wrench and use barrel nut wrench to take off; don't forget to put rosin or sugar on your barrel, wrap in a piece of index card, etc., so that the vise doesn't mar your barrel)
  • Apply moly or some other good anti-seize grease on thread of new barrel
  • Screw barrel nut onto new barrel as far forwards as it will go
  • Put in recoil lug
  • Screw in new barrel until the bolt just closes on the go gauge with a little bit of resistance
  • Using the vise and/or wrench and barrel nut wrench, tighten the barrel nut down and torque it to 40-50 ft-lbs

I'm going to go with the 243 to 6.5-06. I'm pretty sure it's s small shank barrel though. Effie said 1-1/16". So I'm going to just have to change out the barrel I guess? I'm not sure the magazines I got are going to work though. I'm going to have to look into that. looks like the round is a bit longer.
