Savage PTA ejection/extraction problem

I'm in need of assistance on a savage target action problem. It's chambered in 223ai and I can't get it to eject even half of the time. The extractor pulls the case from the chamber but won't hang on long enough to reach the ejection port. It's a rblp action if that makes any difference. I've taken the extractor off and cleaned up any burrs and pulled the ejector and did the same thing with it.

Anyone have a similar problem and find a solution? Or am I stuck plucking the empties from the action with my fingers with this one?

Install a .140 extractor detent ball

The extractor detent balls I bought a bag of 100 Stainless Steel (420 series) in 1/8" {.125} dia. for under $6.00. I bought them because I am a champion of losing them even in a plastic bag. I also clean and lube the extractor. I have had better luck with the replacement extractors by a lot. The replacement balls alone seemed to have solved the problem of not fully extracting for whatever reason. The losing them continues.

The original detente ball in my only Savage bolt gun I still have just to remind me how hand forged ball bearings are just a chip off the old rock. I could only find the metric equivalent and they measure .138. I now have no extraction issues.

So the 'oversized' detent ball will provide more pressure on the extractor, resulting in the case being held tighter to the bolt face?

We have this problem once in a while on my son's 223 Mod 12. Our solution is to clean/oil the bolt face and extractor/ejector . Seems a bit of grunge will hang it up.

I've got 2 Savage PTAs. the dual port that is chambered in 6br has had ejection issues from the get-go. I've done all the "enhanced this and that" but the most effective thing was to change the extractor. The last one lasted about 2000 rounds but now it's time for another. The left port action, originally in 223 and now 223ai, has had 10,000 rounds without ever having one fail to eject. The bolt face on that on was changed to a PTG because of primer cratering.

Thanks for all the info. I dug out a bearing .152". I opened up the hole and polished it and deburred the edge. Reinstalled the extractor. Went 48 for 50. Looks like that was a large part of the problem. I'll order new extractor and see if that makes it 100%.

Thanks again

Don't own a Savage but I've had this problem with some Remington 700's and Model 7's in 223 Rem. The rims on the 223 case are thin and fragile. The Remington extractor cuts the rim and after about 6 -8 reloads the case will hand up in the mag well essential making the rifle a single shot proposition. I never had this problem with any other Remington's in 243, 308.

Didn't want to start a new thread.. My extractor is nasty and wouldn't pull the cartridge out of chamber. I used a small screw driver and was able to remove it and the ball is just nasty. I wiped it down with cloth and oiled with 3-1 oil. It will pull the brass out but then leaves it in action. I'm sure further cleaning would be better. Do I need to order anything?
Will the extractor just come out with force applied with a screw driver or other?

I stuck the end of the bolt in an old pill bottle and filled it just over the end of the bolt with BoreTech.. I'll let it soak overnight and see if that helps.. The spring seems to not have much "spring" left in it..

Ended up ordered a kit from Kinney's Shooting Supply. These guys are great. $31.95 for a complete kit and $5.66 for shipping..
