Savage PTA cartridge length question

Ok so I've been reading a lot as I'm trying to decide what to do with my savage PTA action. I've already asked what kind of barrel I should go with. I think I've decided on the 284win cartridge over the 7mm saum and the 7mm wsm. However I have been reading about this cartridge and have seen people that way saying that the 284 with 180gr bergers is better suited for a long action. I have heard of people building this round on short actions so my question is, will I run into any trouble here or is that only a concern for mag fed rifles? Mine is a single shot so I can't imagine it would be a huge deal. I'd like to hear your thoughts!

The only problem would be extracting a loaded round and if you jam the bullet,it may very well stay in the barrel and dump powder all over.

Yep, Jon & Dave have covered it quite well. My 180 Hybrids are seated .020" off the lands. And I have to pull the bolt on my Savage PTA if I want to remove a loaded round. But since I removed a couple coils off my ejector spring, I don't need the third hand. ;)

I have a .284 Win. built on a RBLP target action that I use for F-Class. The recommendation for a long action only applies to repeaters, because if you load a 180gr Berger to 2.8" COAL, you waste a lot of case capacity. In my gun, I load the 180gr Hybrid to something like 3.25" COAL. Loading through the port is no problem. As for removing a loaded round from a PTA, I find that you only need two an a half hands ;D I use the right hand to press on the trigger and bolt release, the left to pull out the bolt enough to go past the bolt stop but not so much that you eject the round. At that point you no longer need the right hand to press the trigger and bolt release, then it's right hand on bolt and let hand to catch the round as it ejects. Though I ended up just removing the ejector in mine, kinda like Nomad47.
