Savage problems

Asking this questions for my father. I'm somewhat good at troubleshooting but this one was odd. I'm going to take a look at the rifle this weekend.

My father has a savage 110 270win. It's about 7 years old. He says that when he shoots it, after about the third shot the bolt becomes hard to lift to extract the cartridge. He's shoots maybe 15-30 rounds a year and uses it strictly for hunting. Any idea what would cause that?

I'm going to inspect it and see if anything is obvious and put a bore scope down it and inspect it as well. Any guesses? I'll report back here with pictures if needed.

I assume he's shooting factor ammo???

First place I'd look with the bore scope would be for the carbon ring.

My apologies everyone. The problem is when the bolt closes on the third shot. NOT opening.

I assumed it would need a good cleaning but I didn't know if that would cause this. He also told me he just cleans with a bore paste and a jag, because a local gunship by us sells those products and they told him he didn't need a brush. I stopped going to them years ago. And after hearing that I will never return. Seems crazy but that what my old man is telling me

Pictures From my inspection the lugs are not galled, the chamber is pretty clean butut I am seeing a rather small carbon ring I believe. Also the raceway looks to be galled maybe? And perhaps the excessive grease in there it looks like. IMG_20240601_213828727_HDR.jpgIMG_20240601_213727027_HDR.jpgIMG_20240601_213600726_HDR.jpgIMG_20240601_213600726_HDR.jpg

Looks like a build up of carbon and maybe some bore paste mixed in. when your father gets to about the third round fired, it starts sticking to the neck/mouth of the case and making it harder to close.
Give that chamber lead area a good cleaning and show your father how to clean the bore with other means and not just with the bore paste and jag.
You have a poorly trained gunsmith, I believe.

Agreed on the Smith's. They are just there to make money, on common folk who put their trust in them.

I used some iosso and it is night and day. The carbon ring is gone. Still quite a bit of copper fouling though. I need some

Edit. Going to soak the barrel over ight with some boretech eliminator and scum it again in the morning.

Why the cell-phone pics of the borescope images, rather than just posting them directly from the PC?

Might not be a 'gun smith' thing at all, but some random dude behind the counter. Many times they are just enthusiasts, like the rest of us. Doesn't mean they don't get things wrong - or that customers don't take things out of context or misinterpret/misquote what they hear.

A while back there was a long-running thread on the Brian Enos forums on stupid/crazy things heard on *both* sides of the LGS counter... hilarious reading, if you can find it, but it does kind of destroy your faith in humanity just a little bit ;)

The wifi card in that laptop is toasted and I didn't want to hook it up to the Ethernet cable haha.

Yeah this place has one gunsmith and one or two guys who work the counter. The guy who works the counter is the one who made the jags, paste, etc. however the gunsmith does not chamber or do any barrel work. He just fixes firearms apparently. Then charges obscene amounts.

I needed a jam nut for a muzzle break on an AR and he said oh yeah we can put it on not problem and time it real quick. Then took the gun in back, came up front and tried charging me $90.00, and said it'll be ready in about 4 weeks. I laughed and said give me the firearm back. That was the last time I ever went in that place.
Hahaha I'll have to try and find the thread on that. I'm sure that's a good laugh.
