Savage pre-fit barrel recomendations

http://www.mcgowenbarrel.com/catalog4.htm One of the best barrel makers out there as far as Im concerned. Prices are way stellar aswell.

I put a McGowan barrel on my Savage 12. I had to send it back for some minor adjustment before I could get the head space correct. The McGowan people turned it around quickly. I think you can safely use any of the custom barrel makers' pre-fit barrels for the Savage with the same level of accuracy that you get from their barrels otherwise. Pac-Nor, Shilen, McGowan, ... all make pre-fit barrels that shoot well. I have a Shilen barrel and a McGowan barrel. I would recommend either one.

+1 on that. I got mine quick, very nice piece of work. ;D I have no other experence in any other makers though.

p.s. No bedding under barre(1" bull contour 24" long)

Very good results with Shilen, Pac-nor, Lothar Walther all good all clean up very easy. Only have ever bedded under the action not under the tang or barrel / nut

I have a Lothar Walther 6br varmint contour that shoots in the .2's with 105amax's. I don't think you could go wrong with any of the major manufacturers.

There are just so many pre-fits available from so many quality makers. That's great news for all of us. I have had a Shilen Select Match in 7WSM that was an amazing shooter, and have a Kreiger 6brx on a model 12 SS old 2 screw single shot that is a 1/4 inch shooter all day. I shot five groups that averaged 1.7 inches with it one day this summer, and I shoot that distance 1 time per year. I'm sure that if I did my part better, the groups would have been smaller. The action has not been trued and nothing done to it. I'll buy another Kreiger and also want to try Brux, but there are so many great barrel makers.

I bought a 6BR Shilen barrel from Midway and a 6.5X47 Lapua from Pac-Nor. Both are great.

I did not bed ahead of the recoil lug.

Terry -- never shot paper at 600 with it, only steel. If you go to MGM targets and click on the Auto popper and IPSC precision target, you'll see the steel that I shoot to 600 yards. The auto popper has a 4 inch circle at it's widest point and it's pretty rare for me to miss it. Not sayin' I hit it every time I've shot at it but if I do miss it's generally due to a bad wind call.

The IPSC precision target is pretty easy to knock the center plate outward but you've only got about an inch and a half of the plate exposed to knock it back to it's inward position -- TOUGH! The eye/nose box on the head ain't easy either but once you knock it outward the entire plate is exposed over the shoulder of the main target and is a whole lot easier to knock back inward.

For certain it's a whole lot more fun than shootin' paper!
