Savage Pre-Fit Barrel Choice

I am building a 6BR on a new Savage 12. In your opinion, which is the best choice for a pre-fit barrel, shilen or SSS/Douglas.

Thanks,

Jim

Also consider PacNor. Myself and many other members of this board have PacNor pre-fits that are very accurate.

Which Pac-Nor rifling do you prefer in an 8 twist barrel.

I'm very happy with the 3-groove Supermatch stainless. That's not to say a 4- or 6-groove won't shoot as well, but the 3-groove works great for me.

The folks at PacNor will tell you they think the conventional rifling is slightly more accurate, on average, than their "polygonal" barrels.

I have two Douglas Sharp Shooter Supply barrels and three Pac Nors; all shoot and clean very well. My next Savage pre-fit will be a Shilen just to spread the money around and compare. Even though Douglas does not lap their barrels, they shoot very well and last a long time.

+1 on the SSS/Douglas barrels. I picked up a 'take-off' 6mm BR barrel from someone who just had too many "6mm-something-or-others" in the safe. 50rds thru it, best $250 I spent in a while. That thing was kinda slow, but 600yds and in, damn it was accurate. Last fall in a fit of stupidity I sold it off; I believe the new owner is quite happy with it :thumb:

I will probably try a Shilen as well just to say I have...

Have tried all of the above, good to great results, but best barrel yet is benchmark, 8 twist on 6.5/284, got it from Kevin Rayhill at Stockade Gunstocks .com. 15 round break in, grouped so good with the first 3 loads i tried that went with the one i had most components.

I would vote for a Pac-nor 3 groove Super match as well.

I have one on my Savage that shoots as good as my Bartlien on a Kelby action.

I am taking it to 1k this Saturday, so I should now more.

Mine is a 1-8.5 twist Super Match 3 groove 30 inches long .875 at the muzzle.

Sits in a SSS br stock, SSS trigger, Seekins base and my Burris BD scope sits on top of that.

RHINOUT!

Trying to remember all the folks who make prefits for Savage...

Sharp Shooter Supply,Douglas)
Shilen

Sure there's another dozen I'm forgetting.

My 6mm BR squirrel gun has a 28" three groove PacNor super match straight barrel at 1.055". Sits in a Kevin Rayhill BR stock, shoots great, easy to clean, easy to install.

I have just completed break-in on a Shilen 26" 8" twist Super Match barrel in 6 BR .272" nk. with the ratchet rifling and I am quite pleased. It was a long wait on it and probably will get Kevin Rayhill to make the next Savage barrel but I just had to try the Shilen and I don't regret it one bit.

Lothar Walther

I love my Lothar Walther Supermatch barrels. They shoot great in my .260 Rem and .300 WM.

Just wish they'd make one in 6.5x47L!

I know they will 'custom' make one to your specs... but it ain't exactly cheap, nor quick, like Spider Firearms pulling one off the shelf and sticking it in the mail!)

I would go with a lothar walther or a shilen or a full custom. Ive heard of many problems with pacnor reamers, unfinished or problem barrels, hardness that is always 5 points lower than their spec which is spec +or- 5, and them not standing behind barrels for gunsmiths. Iver heard of a few problems with shilen but no where as many as pacnor.

I have had only great experiences with Pac-Nor bbls. I have used 5 in the last two years. Randy Robinett talked me into trying them a short while back.

I recently had a Lothar Wather pre-fit in 6.5x284 that wouldn't group with anything to save my life. After rebedding and trying everything I knew, a cast was taken of the chamber and a very competent smith told me that the chamber was slightly out of round so I will probably go with a shilen next time.
