Savage Nut Problem

I've got a Savage 112 with what looks like a normal notched nut but neither the round notch wrench nor the square notch wrench fits. I know Savage makes smooth nuts but that is not what this is. Is there a third notched nut out there? Anyone know where I can get a wrench to fit it?

Take a look at this:

I only know of the two notches and the round.

I have the wheeler wrench with the round and square notches as you describe. The small shank nut that I have, will fit very snug in the squared notch side. The round notch side will only go 1/2 way up the smooth part of the nut and not reach the notches.
Check the square notch side for burrs that can prevent the wrench from going into place

Maybe you have a large shank barrel nut? Are they different than the small shank nuts? (small shank = 1.05", lrg = 1.2")

My wrench did not fit the nut (large shank) until I filed it down. I am using a double-ended wrench that is supposed to fit either nut, but I still had to file the lugs a little in order to get the proper fit. Good shooting...James

No. Both the large shank and small shank jam nuts have identical OD. The id is obviously different. I am referring to the jam nuts in current production with SQUARE notches.
The wrenches sold have two applications. One side for BOTH large and SMALL shank jam nuts (square notch) the other side for the round bottom jam nuts.
So if you have 'square' bottom nuts (the most common by far) your one wrench opening fits large AND small shank nuts.

I have the same wrench square notches and rounded notches.

Some guns fit really tight in the square notches. There is no other type than the new smooth the square notch and the rounded notch.

I really had to keep working on one gun and filed a little on the wrench but it finally went on

Keep working at it you'll get it on

The gun is apparently faulty.....Donate it to me and you'll never have to worry about it again.....Sometimes I'm so funny I amaze myself...ha

If it's a wheeler wrench, they fit extremely tight......There are only two types..

Thanks guys. I'll have a go with a file. Not planning to donate the rifle but if anyone wants the POS nut, all yours. No backsies. :)
