Savage Model 25 Walking Varminter

Brousing the racks of a local gun store and came across one in .222 Remington with a wooden VS. a Tupperware stock. It was a brand new rifle even though Savage does not list a wood stocked version on their website.

Looks like it would be a functional truck/vehicle gun at a reasonable price. Anyone here have any experience with the model 25?

I have not heard nothing but good reports on that action. I know the older models had wood stocks and plastic. Could be new old stock

My sage rat shooting buddy has one in 17 Hornet, and his is very accurate. His was the plastic stock, so a wood one would definitely be a nice upgrade.

I bought one a year ago in 17 Hornet.
Mine is the plastic stocked one .
The most accurate rifle I have ever owned.
But,it has been back to the factory once already for ejection issues.
Works better now but still not 100% reliable.
And be aware that YOU have to pay to send it back to them.
But when they work they are good shooters.

I must've gotten a dog. It was probably made on Friday, December 23. My wood stock Model 25 in .17 Hornet won't shoot any better than 7/8" groups, no matter the powder. It doesn't feed worth a s&#@ either, it doesn't have a standard chamber with a simple feed ramp. The cartridge comes in at way too much of an angle and if forced dents the brass due to getting caught up against the inside of their weird little cylindrical pre-chamber piece. Also a PITA to clean because of this, and standard bore guides won't fit, at least the two that I have.

And to boot, the brass periodically gets stuck in the chamber after firing requiring the reverse entry cleaning rod maneuver, which of course renders it almost useless on a hunt.

My second savage rifle, first that wasn't a gift, and my last.

They have a lot of problems with that Model 25.
I was aware of the issues but was wanting a 17 Hornet so I took a chance.
They are the only ones making one since CZ stopped making the 527 .
I hope I can get mine sorted out, they are usually very accurate rifles .

Savage would probably fix it. With any luck they will replace it and you can sell it as new unopened.

I don't think any Hornets feed like butter. My 527 feeds ok, but sometimes you gotta fumble with it a little.

I have one in 22 Hornet that will not feed certain style bullets but it is very accurate. The 17 Hornet version I have pisses me off because the cases do not extract all the time

Thanks to everyone for the information. I have decided not to purchase the Model 25. It is one of the early wood thumb-hole stock ones and appears to be new old stock. It is at Trader Jerry's in Salem Va if anyone is interested.
