Savage model 12 ?

Hello, today i bought a model 12 savage in 308 at an auction. I am looking to mabe get a different barrel for it. It has a heavy flutted barrel on it now. Can these be changed easily at home. If so what is the procedure for changing them and getting the headspace set correctly. Thanks for the help.

You can change it but you might want to shoot it first. You just might like it. You would need an action vice, barrel nut wrench, head space gauges and a different barrel. Savage has a large shank and a small shank so you have to make sure to get the correct one for you size action. Depending on the caliber you want to change to will decide if you need to change the bolt head as well. Bolt head changes are easier than changing a barrel and barrel changes are easy. What model 12 did you get?

You won't have any trouble selling your 308 heavy barrel after you remove it. There are always people looking for this type of barrels. Northland Shooter Supply has all kinds of Savage and after market barrels for sale at discount prices. You should be able to find any caliber you want.

Should that read "...barrel vise..."?

I think he got, I've never needed a "barrel" vice to remove a Savage barrel, hold the action, loosen the barrel nut, off comes the barrel.

Barrel "Vice" is what you get after owning a switch barrel Savage for a while...Barrel "Vise" is what you need to change all those barrels you start to collect.

But, with the Savages you mostly need a barrel nut wrench, made by Wheeler and others, and a way of clamping the action. These aren't typically torqued on like old Remington 722's and Springfields.
