Savage Model 12

I was trolling the pawn shops and found a savage arms model 12 .204 with a heavy fluted barrel. Listed price was $480. Is this a good deal?

What calibers can this action/bolt face be changed to with a barrel change?? Is that (.204) the caliber I want for 0-600 yd f class or varmit shooting?

Sean

Sean, the .204 Ruger is basically the .222 Remington Magnum necked down to.20 caliber. It is a very impressive varmint eliminator but I think 600 yds. is stretching its abilities. The bolt face will accept .222 Rem., .223 Rem., .222 Rem. Mag. and any wildcats based on them. The Model 12 bolt head can easily be changed to any caliber.

As for price, if it is in a laminated stock, i.e., Varmint Low Profile, BVSS, in good condition $480 is a good price. If it has one of those black plastic stocks, I personally don't think it's a bargain, especially if you don't really want the caliber.

Good luck ...

Reed,

Thank you. I was reluctent to post asking that here. I am somewhat embarrassed by my lack of knowledge. I guess I have to start somwhere.

It had a hardwood stock, I am intrigued by this rifle, I may grab it to play with..... It had a tasco scope on it, so that ma be the first thing to start on with this.

I believe you'll be pleasantly surprised by the accuracy from the Savage. By wood stock, do you mean laminate? Factory Savage barrels can be a "copper mine" until they smooth out but will still shoot bug hole until they need a cleaning.

Once you buy the savage system you can make anything that will fit a short action out of it,right out to the wsm cartridges.I love the idea of being able to put my own barrel on and safely shoot it in what ever caliber I want and can afford. The cheapest switch barrel in existence to date. The only draw back is the lousy triggers but that can be remedied by replacing it once.

John, You are 100% right the Savage quite a rifle for the price and I have not had one yet that didn't shoot very well and some are even better. As you said the triggers leave something to be desired but you can get them to work pretty well.

I adjusted my savage trigger to 3#'s and cant get all the creep out it,but it works fairly well for me. It is a 22-250AI and shoots nice tight little groups and now can switch it to a .260 rem. Both are shilen select match barrels and they are prechambered and threaded at shilen and shoot almost as good as my bench gun in 6mmbr with a 2 oz trigger. That is the true beauty of that savage,it is the only out of the box switch barrel that is affordable. Nothlan supply sells the shilens at a great price. He is listed on savage shooters forum and stocks lots of barrels and from 3 different makers. He has alot of takeoff new barrels as well.

As far as switch barrel..Northland Shooter Supply on the Savage Shooter forum has Reminton threaded barrels with a barrel nut that work just like Savage ... check them out

Try the LW 1/8 barrel, in .223 and a set of headspace guages. With the 77gr. SMK, this will easily give you the range you are looking for.
