Savage model 12 bolt rebuild ?

rifle has about 500 rounds down the barrel. I checked the shoulder bump and it is at .003. Is that too much ? Only thinking about rebuilding the bolt to stop the misfires and ftf

If it’s .003 that would be just fine check pin fall

The Gun Shack guys that sell all the Savage parts is who told me when I ordered a new replacement stock Savage 223 bolt head to replace one that was factory machined rough as hell and was smearing brass
Have worked with a few Savages and as much as I like the platform I definitely wouldn't trust the heads to all be exactly the same- after all these are the people that made the bad head you were replacing in the first place.

Thanks for answering my question.
All depends on the depth of the bolt face
My question was directed as to WHO said the headspace is the same.
It is misleading and shows an absolute lack of knowledge about headspace.
In fact I’ll go out on a limb and say the same headspace is not impossible but highly improbable.
This is where the arbitrary bumping of shoulders rears its ugly head.

I feel .003 is a big number when added to the actual starting headspace.
That .003 is gone when the cartridge is fired. Where did the brass come from and how many times do you feel it can take the stretch. If the cartridge chambers correctly why are you bumping?

I missed where it was stated that the head was ‘bad’.

Picture and measurements* of BAD Bolt Head?
*(Lug length and face depth).
I guess I've been lucky. 4 bolts heads all head space within 0.001".
The PTG bolt head did not. Seems MANY YEARS ago the face depth was 0.118" or so.
PTG must be making them to old specs.
Now they seem to be 0.110 to 0.112" but factory pin protrusion is 0.058" to 0.060".

This is where it was said that a bolthead was bad, hence my not trusting the same ppl to make other bolt heads exactly the same, which would headspace the same if replaced.

I've owned a number of Savages and again, like the platform version much. However I would not trust a mass manufactured part to drop in as an exact fit to the thousandth inch. It may, but it may not.

Check with Gun Shack for Savage parts, etc. But first do make sure you brass is formed into your rifles chamber and you are not setting the should back when FL or neck sizing your fired brass.
Adjust the die to just touch the shoulder and not set it back and see if your light strikes don't go away, before you go changing bolt head and the firing pin spring/s.

I like both Gun Shack and Midway for Savage parts.
Last bolt was a $129 Right/Stainless with $25 off order.
Same headspace as the others.
Spring force, DeCocked was 23 pounds (on a platform scale) and protrusion was 0.059"
Hasn't been shot but would not expect light strikes.
Bolt lift is TERRIBLE, especially going over the cocking notch.

Bump to just barely get a lighter close. Don't bump just to be bumping. Fit check in action.
0.001" clearance is plenty on a bolt gun.

Anyone care to report lug length and face depth on THEIR .223 (right hand) bolt heads?
And would still like to see a picture of this BAD bolt head.

Search SavageShooters.com. This is the Home page. All things Savage is here in the Forums.

Your bolt / bolt head may need to be tweaked or adjusted, and/or Your Head Space may need adjusting…but it is “doubtful“ that Your bolt/bolt head needs to be rebuilt.

Good Luck

Rebs, Can you please elaborate on your issue?
- how often does it happen?
-when it ftf’s, if you recock the bolt will it fire the second time?
-has it happened for the whole 500rnds the rifles been shot?
-any work done to the action?(trigger, bolt head swap, etc)
-factory ammo or handloads?
-if handloads, 1 brand of brass and primer or tried different ones?
-if factory ammo, is it just one brand or have you tried different ones?

-can you post pics of bolt head and firing pin tip?
- And pics of the misfired primer along side of a fired primer?

sometimes if recocked two or three times it will fire, New Jard trigger installed, it did the same thing when the original savage target trigger was in it
Hand loads with Lapua brass and does it with CCI BR4 and CCI 450 primers. I will try to get pictures tonight
