Savage Model 111 LRH 338 Lapua

Well here's another thats not exactly my cup of tea that I'm gonna get set up for a friend !

Savage Model 111 Longe Range Hunter in 338 Lapua with a 6-24 x scope the scope has a 30mm tube a 50mm objective , parallex adjustable , lighted tactical reticle and tactical target knobs .

He bought a box of Hornady factory 250 grain ammo before I got involved , which personally I think was a waste ! I coulda botten him 40 pieces of brass for the same thing . But I digress !

Anyway I have 20 pieces of brass a set of RCBS dies and a box of Hornady 225 grain SST's . The factory stuff will get me on paper at 100 yards . And I can start reload trials with the 20 pieces of brass using RL22 this wednesday if the weather holds !

Before I graced you guys with my presence I set up four suppressed rifles with sub sonic loads in the past 3-4 months !

That was the other stuff thats not exactly my thing !

Set up a pair of Remington 700 TAC rifles with 20" barrels in 223 and 308 for one friend , did a Savage Hog Hunter 22" also in a 308 and finally a Howa 1500 308 with a 20" pipe and a 10 shot detachable mag !

The two Remingtons are using Nosler 60 grain BT's in the 223 at 1050 FPS and the 308's shooting Sierra 220 grain RN at about 1065 FPS . My other two friends are using the Outlaw bullets 220 grain bullet both at about 1060 FPS . This Outlaw bullet is "supposed" to open at 100 yards on deer type targets . We shall see very soon as our Damage Control Permits on another friends peach orchard are about to get going again . And I will field test the Savage Hogger with the Outlaw bullet . Most likely try the 338 Lapua as well .

I might add the when I sight any of the trio of 308's dead on at 100 yards they all are pretty much 1 1/2" high at 25 yards , 3 1/2" high at 50 yards and 3" high at 75 yards . And the worst 3 shot group any of them fired at 100 yards was 3/4" plenty good for deer targets even if one wanted to take head shots . I also might add the most inexpensive the Howa shot the best 3 shot group at 100 yards . Think I shot one 3 shot group that was a ragged hole measuring a hair below 3/10ths !

Got to the range today with the 338 Lapua !

Got it an inch low at 25 yards with the 250 grain factory stuff and then tried my 225 grain handloads at 100 yards .

With the Hornady 225 SST I tried the following in the order listed ,

RL-22 91.2 grains 2" group 3 shots
RL-22 92.2 grains did not measure
RL-22 93.2 grains 1.125" 3 shot group

H4831 93.2 grains .875" 3 shot group
H4831 94.2 grains 1.875" 3 shot group
H4831 95.2 grains 1.375" 3 shot group

I suspect I'll give all 6 loads a go again next week . Once I decide which of these I'm gonna go with I'll load a bunch and try it at 200 and 300 yards .

I expect all 6 of those groups to possibly shrink a touch . A couple of them I am certain I may have pulled the shot and the one I didn't measure I think the scope was moving between shots from an adjustment .

The recoil from this thing is a good bit less then the recoil of my Ruger #1B in 338 WIN MAG . That big old muzzle brake takes alot out of it !

The Vortex 6-24AO 50mm with the 30mm tube seems to be an excellent target/tactical scope . But again thats an assumtion on my part as "tactical ain't my thing" .

I'm gonna set this thing up with the 225 SST , but I wanna see if I can talk the owner into getting one or two of the 338 bullets in the 265-300 grain range just to see what it'll do .

If I can get it doing well enough to suit me at our club out to 350 yards we'll cart the thing to another friends place and shoot his steel out to 600 meters .

I'll post pics of the groups tommorrow when I am at the shop .

I would try 250 sierra match kings. what's the twist on that lapua barrel? Might even be able to shoot the 300 match kings. Also do you have any vv n560. That shoots awesome with match kings in my armalite ar30. Good luck

Well I just finished cleaning the Lapua and found out the base has come loose !
That may have a little to do with the group size

Also took pics of the groups and measured them with calipers and got slightly smaller readings . I did it yesterday with a tape measure !

Showing them in the order they were shot also !

This one was shot after I made scope adjustments and the first shot was the high one . I am "assuming" the scope hadn't settled back in !

Wanna work with 93.2 grains of RL22 and the Hornady 225 SST some more as well as 94.2 grains of H4831 and the Hornady 225 SST .

Still having extractor problems with the handloads and the factory stuff . Think I'll have my gunsmith buddy take the bolt apart and see if everythings copasetick !

Also gonna scrubb the F outta the chamber as they seem to be sticking a bit when I tap them out with the cleaning rod !

When I first got my 338 lapua I started off using hornady brass. Starting having extraction problems after the second firing & got worse every firing after to the point that I had to knock the bolt back with a rubber mallet sometimes. Broke down & bought some lapua brass & extraction issues went a way. Think I'm on my 5th firing with no problems. Good luck.

Same with me, Lapua brass and the sticking went away. Bruno's sells lapua brass by the piece i believe. I tested my load at 1000 today, 5.25 inch group. This was 90 grains N570, 300 Berger hybrid otm, Fed 215m, Lapua brass, Ten thou off lands. I am not sure how good this is with a completely stock factory 110BA or if i should expect better. The conditions were good, hot with a mirage but thats everywhere right now.

Think I'm gonna try and talk the owner into buying 50 pieces of Lapua ::)

Now with that being said dunno if he's gonna go for brass thats about $2.50 a stick but we shall see !

I think at some point I'm going to have to get myself a Savage 111 LRH . But I think I'll get a 6.5x284 ;)

You didn't say or I didn't catch what your planning on using the 338 for, what range you have been shooting your groups, and what your expectations are but if it were me and those were shot at 100 I would ditch the bullets and maybe the RL22 and get a box of 250 SMK's or 250 Lapua Senars and work with those and 4831SC. Also if you can shoot at least 200 preferably 300 yards. A good 338lm rifle and load will shoot a 5 shot 1/2 moa group to 600 and way past if your on your game.

My best load for that rifle is:
Lapua Brass
Federa 215 Gold Medal primer
91.7 H1000 or ADI 2217 (same powder)
300 Gr Berger Hybrid
2790 ft/s
Overall length 96.5mm (dont fit the magazine) 0.02 from land
.48" at 200 meters
Try it and tell me results, for me shoot in a metal plate 15"x15" at 1350 meters with 41.5 MOA elevation with that load.

I don't think you caught alot ;)

The rifles not mine so actual use is not mine to decide .

The guy that owns the thing is happy with what I've gotten already. He's also shall we say "thrifty" when it comes to spending money !

The guy that owns this rifle makes suppressors on the side and wants this thing to take some of his clients out and shoot it at 100 yards plain and simple . So the Hornady 225 SST will be fine for what he wants .

So it does have an intended use "clients shooting at 100 yards". Since he's "thrifty" stop. No use wasting a penny more unless your having fun HELPING him ;).

Oh before I give it back to him I'll try it at 200 , 300 and possibly 600 with the 225 STS and very possibly shoot a deer or bear with it on the DCP's in the next month . But I wouldn't be surprised if thats it as far as this thing goes shooting at living beings .

Don't have the Lapua cases yet from Bruno's but I would assume they'll be here by the end of the week (I hope).

Shot the cannon at 220 and 340 yards today .

At 220 it was MOA and at 340 it was a shade under MOA . Not great but not bad either since it's my first try with this thing at those distances .

Perhaps by the end of august I'll have worked it out to 600 yards . We will see 8)

Mail it and a bunch of loaded ammo and I will try to find some open space to tell you how it shoots at distance!!!! ;)

Last time you were here you remmeber the gunsmith shop I took you to ?

This rifle is owned by the guy that works outta the shop selling suppressors and he's a WEEEEE bit anal sometimes .

We have a customer/neighbor of the gunsmiths that has about a 650 yard semi Tac range but the dumba..s..s doesn't have a bench . I think we're gonna make up a decent movable bench and I walk it out at his place . The guy with the Tac range used to be an instructor at Blackwater in NC . He's a little unique to put it lightly !
