Savage Model 10 able to shot the 100-105gr?

First post,
I was looking to purchase a Savage Model 10 Predator Hunter series rifle. For my first center fire medium range target/hunting rifle,Deer) . The rifle come stock from what I have been reading a 1:9.5 or 1:10 Twist out of a 22' Medium contour barrel. It will be chambered in .243, It has dual pillar bedding and a free floating barrel as well. I would like to use this rifle on the target range and for hunting deer. Right now I do not have a lot of money for the custom rifles talked about in here. Would this be a good starting point? Well now for the question, would it be able to handle the 100 or 105 gr bullets? Down the road I would like to get a new barrel with a 1:7.5 twist, but for now this is all I can afford. Please help me out. I have hear nothing but great things about this site and the people on it.

Brian, I owened the Savage PH in 22-250,1-9 twist) I am not sure about the 243 and the 105's,may be a bit heavy). However, I can vouch for the rifle!! Mine shot .5' at 100yds all day long and with good reloads 52gr Match bullets it could shoot in the .3's. At 300 yds by best groups were close to 2' Anyway, the gun is light but the barrel is stout and well free floated. The trigger is very nice and crisp. The camo is top notch and I swear if I put it down in the woods it was hard to spot! Everyone was impressed buy its looks and the way it shot. As an upgrade you could always go with a faster twist custom pre fit barrel by Shilen and a better stock by B&C for around $200 but honestly for deer and occational target its hard to beat for the money the way it comes.

Even out of a 243, I don't think you'll be able to shoot 105-108gr bullets. There's nothing wrong with the 95gr stuff thats out there. Shoot the barrel out.

These are very nice varmint guns, but if you are planning on changing the barrel later it will not match the camo of the action. It may still look good though, not really sure. You could also look at the 12fv in a 243. They are 100+ cheaper than the Pred Hunter, and you could use the extra cash to buy a Duramax stock in any camo you want. They are only $100, and are ALOT better than the factory synthetic stock. In the end you end up with as good a gun with a better stock for the same price or less.

+1 on what pdog said. I would buy a blued action, like a 12fv or 10 and buy a camo stock. That heavy barrel could get old fast if you plan to be mobile in the woods, like for deer hunting. You could buy a 22 inch .243 take off barrel from a steven's or a savage for about $60 bucks, and if you buy a 12fv with a .243 barrel, which in that model would be a varmint contour, you could switch the barrels. In fact, you could switch the barrels out and the bolt heads to just about anything you want and buy a used stock to fit your needs. Check out savageshooters.com for lots of info on how to switch barrels and advise on savages.

Have fun and good luck

My old,1 yr old and 400rds through her)PH 22-250 is for sale right now for $499, from a local dealer its light enough to carry ALL DAY LONG and with A-max or BARNES X bullet Deer are not a problem out to a few hundred yds. By the time you mess around buying barrels, stocks trued actions, which may or may not be necessary) you will spend alot more than what a new PH costs.

The 9.25 twist in a .243 Savage barrel will stabilize a 105 a-max just fine. The farthest I've shot them out to is 600 yards with great accuracy, with a 22 inch sporter barrel. I used 49 grains of Retumbo, remington brass, winchester primers.
