Savage MKII TR .22

Hey does anyone have any experience with these rifles. I have been thinking of one for a while now and im just not sure what to do. What kind of accuracy are you getting and what kind of optics would you suggest. Thanks

Pretty good feedback on this rifle on snipers hide. Sounds like everyone likes it.

I was just about to buy the short barreled mkII FV from Lipseys with the threaded barrel, but I had to buy a darn weedwacker today :( There was a couple on Gunbroker. It doesn't look like Lipseys has any the price was removed.

Gun Blast reviewed the TR. Jeff liked it.

The consensus was the the TR is a huge price to pay for the stock. I was planning on getting a SSS stock for mine.

Good luck,
JLM

243 HH You will not be dissapointed if you buy one. My Mark 11 btv(thumbhole laminate blue ) is bad to the bone with SK standard pluss ammo. Shot 4 matches with it this year (sporter class) shot second place twice, 1 first( last time out )and one we wont talk about (driver error). My friend has one that I borrowed last fall to shoot a match for the first time ever and won both sporter and target classes. Good Luck Neil

I just picked mine up and love it!!!! it is so fun to shoot :), i get the best accuracy with wolf extra. shot a 1.5 inch group edge to edge at 100yd with no wind, my best group at that range with it so far. i put a 4x9 Nikon prostaff on it and i can hit a 7 inch steel plate at 200yd without a problem. i bought mine just for practice and plinking around and it fits my needs very well.

243Hog,
You cannot go wrong with that Savage MKII TR. She is one fantastic looking gal. I just bought the MKII BV model and I can't believe how accurate she is. A Friend has that TR model and man is she a looker and shooter or what! What I might suggest to you is the ammo you use because she'll sure perfrom with the right stuff. I've found Wolf Match Target (40 gr) is good for practice and Wolf Match Extra (40 gr) even better. Then if you want to compete or even improve further, try either Federal Premium Gold Match (40 gr) or Eley Match EPS (40 gr). PM me if you need sources for the best prices around that I've been able to find. Now go get that gal and have some fun!

The heavy barrel Savage guns seems to shoot quite well. I would say about equal to the CZ heavy barrel. Which is better will depend on the specific gun and match with the ammo. I have a Savage BTVS and I can outshoot an Anschutz (Weatherby) 64 sporter gun that my friend has. However, it is probably quite unrealistic to expect to outshoot an Anschutz 54 action with a good barrel.

I've done fairly extensive testing for accuracy with my gun and got the results in the chart below. As you can see ammo ranges from very good to very bad. We can't get Wolf or SK ammo in Canada (at least when I was testing), but it really is lower end to mid range Lapua, made in the Lapua factory (which used to be SK before Lapua bought it).

The Savage rimfire AccuTrigger is quite easy to modify to bring pull down to less than 16 oz. Here is a link which decribes how to do it.

I use a Bushnell Banner 6-18x50 scope on mine. It would be nice to have more power, 1/8 moa adjustments, target turrets, and a 1/8 moa target dot reticle. Weaver T36 or Sightron II Big Sky 36x42.

I handled the 17HMR version at the range a few days back, very nice rifle. Feels very solid and fits far better than some other rimfires I have seen in the past. It's large enough that it fits like a "real" rifle, not the toy gun fit you get from a lot of others. I can't speak for accuracy, as I haven't seen the 22lr version yet, but that 17 was a nail driver.
And if nothing else, the TR just looks awesome. It has to be the coolest looking factory rimfire bolt gun made right now.
