Savage MKII FVSR thoughts

Of the ones I have seen the performance and quality varies a lot between guns.
My brother has one and he has spent the equivalant of the price of a Tikka trying to find an ammo that will give consistently good groups.

I expect that if you go to the Savage forum on RFC you will see everything from high praise to "what a piece of junk" comments.

Got a buddy that has one. Not a bad rifle. It shoots way above its price point. It shoots SK very well. We did replace the trigger with a Rifle Basix. Not sure it was worth the $100.

After my B-Mag .17WSM experience, I will never buy a Savage rimfire again.
I love my CZ 457 Varmint .17HMR that replaced my B-Mag.

Savage, while a strong presence in CF, is not always a winner in their RF lines. You failed to explain the intended purpose of the rifle. ARA Factory, informal club matches, squirrel hunting, plinking/informal target shooting....etc.? The cost of accuracy between the CZ and Savage may be of no consequence to you or could be very important depending are what you want to do with the rifle. If you're looking to compete, or shoot a squirrel in the eye ball, CZ or Tika IMO.

Old hotrodder quote "Speed costs money, how much do you want to spend?". Then there's 'buy once, cry once'. Decide what you want the rifle to do, then buy what is appropriate. Or, buy cheap and hope it fits your needs.

So basspro has them for 269$ thinking of buying one what's the verdict on them thanks. I have been wanting a cz mtr but the price difference I just don't know.
Before buying be sure to handle it, when you do squeeze the forearm tip and you will notice that it easily deflects enough to hit the barrel which is not good for accuracy.
The stock on them is more of milk jug plastic than a quality plastic that has some rigidity to it. Also try removing and inserting the magazine to see if locks in properly - that seems to be another common issue.

They had 17HMR on sale locally for $229, I was thinking of getting one for a truck gun but after handling one I couldn't bring myself to buy one.

Thanks for the replies think I will stick to buying the cz.
No doubt it will hurt a little more upfront but if you prorate the cost over the life of the rifle it makes it easier to justify. And then there is the issue of how much money you will save by not having to spend a ton of money trying to find an ammo that the Savage "may" like.

I have LH B14r,LH Savage MKII,Left and Right CZ457 and had a LH Vodoo.
Cz,...DIY versitility....,,barrel changes, stocks, scope changes and triggers availibility.I shoot a left and right CZ457,both have Jard triggers.I've converted many RH stocks to left
I 've shot ELR22 on Saturday with a Ziess S3 with a 50 moa base.Slide off the Zeiss with the base, slide on the Golden Eagle with high rings and a zero moa base ,add a 3" stock adapter, rezero, all in a couple minutes, then shoot RFBR on Sunday.Hunting season (starlings),slide on a 3-9 scope, remove the 25"Modacam barrel, install the factory 20.5" barrel.

Savage has crappy fussy magazines--trigger is just so so unless you spend $$ and then just so so
Stock is garbage so there is another $$$$ in the end get a CZ with a $10 trigger spring set stock screws to around 19-20 in lbs get some SK and start winning--and CZ holds the value better--I bought an At One 3 yrs ago $625 just sold it $600

Get the CZ 457 with the MTR barrel then all you need is the little trigger spring replaced, I have a spring for you if you need one . I bought my guns at kentucky gun company on line if you cant get it locally.

Stock is terrible. Sometimes shoot surprisingly well if you don't mind the trigger and stock problems. Great for informal shooting, lacking severely for anything above that level.

I picked up a used one just because it was cheap. I'm not a Savage fan, but at times it shoots well above it's price range. The stock does suck as well as the trigger, but it's a decent gun for a beater.
