Savage MK II magazine feed problems

Anyone here familiar with Savage MK II magazine feeding problems?

I've a MK II FV and the 5 round magazine won't feed the 5th round. First 4 feed fine.

Have a 10 round magazine and it won't feed at all. It appears the magazine lips are off a bit, as it doesn't take much of a bump when inserting either magazine to cause 1 or more rounds to jump out. But, I don't want to arbitrarily start bending the feed lips and make it worse.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for looking.

tighten and or shim the bottom metal -usually tighten front shim rear does it. sometimes just tightening both
I'm confused. The magazine locks into the magazine well via a spring metal clip. It's not touching the bottom metal anywhere.

Possible magwell misalignment...have you tried loosening and retightening the magwell screws?

I have a Savage Mkll BTV and have been shooting it for several years in practice and competition and have not had a problem. I have the Savage poly 5 round, Savage steel 5 round and several Csspecs steel 10 rounds all which work out of the box.
I have shot SK, CCI, Eley and Lapua with no problems other than (LOL) accuracy (which improved with more expensive ammo).

I've had the entire mag assembly/trigger assembly off looking for something amiss.

It's a problem with the bolt not catching the case head on the 5 round mag on the 5th round. Bolt isn't catching the case head.on any round with the 10 round mag.

Somehow, the mag isn't at the correct angle. I've tried putting pressure both forward and rearward on both magazines. Can't move either enough to make any difference.

Perhaps Willoughby meant shimming the mag well and it's a verbiage problem?

I had the same issue those stamp metal magazines are junk but I finally shot it today and after tweaking the lips and punching the ears where they go together my issue was resolved I ran 50 rds CCI. Standards through it without a hiccup they spring open every rd would come out of mine

I'm beginning to wonder if the mag well is made incorrectly and the feed lips are a secondary issue.

The mag well seems to hold the mag at an incorrect angle/height.

Then add the feed lip issue.......

It's all stamped steel. No machining.

Thanks for the input. At least I've a theory to test now.

Do you have the stainless mags or the black ones? I feed a custom stiller 2500 with savage mags and the stainless feed flawless but if I put a black steel one in there it's terrible. I've tried several of each and the stainless ones always work and the black ones never do. I've had 2 of the black ones pop apart at the side welds before I bought the stainless kind

These are the black ones.

I suppose it's also possible the mag well geometry is fine and the mags are defective.

Not interested in buying 10 to find out if it's the mags, however.

Wish I had specs to compare both to. Pretty sure Savage won't be interested in providing that.

I use savage magazines in my Stiller 2500XR. The stainless one it came with works fine. Bought four blued ones and had to braze side plates to keep them from spreading. Picked up some ceespec 20 rounders. They are welded and much better quality then Savage mags. Hope this helped . Tom

They make 5,10,15 and 20 round magazines for Savage mark II. They were not any more money then Savage mags.Tom

When I was adjusting the trigger on the one I had, the magazine guide looked to be easily bent with the action out of the stock.

I have two 93s in .22wmr, with multiple magazines for each. I've had to tweak every one of them a bit to improve function. This is fairly common with Savage rimfires, a friend of mine has had multiple MkIIs and has to do the same.

Update - had the opportunity to try my magazines in another Savage MK II.

They feed perfectly.

So. The problem with the first rifle is in the mag well. Something isn't aligned correctly.

When I figure out what, I'll update the thread again.
