Savage Mdl 10 mis-fires

A newer model Savage Mdl 10FP,April '07) total of 1087 rds fired, has developed a bad habit of mis-fires. First had the firing pin "click", without any primer indent, then mis-fires began, approx. 2 out of every 5 attempts. Primer will have a "normal" looking indent without firing, will fire on second attempt. If problem is in the bolt, would prefer to attempt to repair without shipping back to factory. Any suggestions on bolt dis-assembly/ never took one apart. Any help would be appreciated.

Not trying to be funny or agrevate you but some people have reported that if you close the bolt rather hard on the accu-trigger models they will not fire. I have the new F-class 6.5-284 and if I close the bolt hard at all it will not fire. This may not be your problem. Just thought I would let you know about that problem. Happy T-day. Bill

If the dent in the primer is always light or nonexsistant, I would suspect excessive headspace. Have you removed/installed the barrel on your gun recently? Put a fired case in a headspace guage and find out.

You may want to post this question on a Savage-specific website.

First, I don't believe the FP's come with the new target accu-triggers that are having the "slam fire" issue.

Second, I am tending to agree with keithcatfish in that it sounds like excessive headspace. Have you just full length or body sized the cases?

If not I would check the firing pin protrusion as there may be something going on inside the bolt.

Did you pop, blank) a primer or 2 or 20 in the past...if so there may be a lil piece of primer cup material inside the bolt body ...gettin in the way of the fireing pin travel!!???!! Take the bolt apart and look for de-breeee...clean it..
As someone mentioned ..there is also the possibility tht the bbl is installed with improper head-space....lots-0-folks think that it is easier or simpler to change a Savave bbl...it is not simpler than a bbl that you just un-screw and then re-instal it or another on the reciever...the only thing you have to worry about there is ---get it tite!!
Worst case scenerio is ...bad spring...get another and replace it while the bolt is apart for cleaning.

Answer to all: No, the barrel was never removed, it's a stock factory rifle all the way, no modifications. All primer idents look "normal". A piece of debris inside the bolt makes sense, but I still don't know how to dis-assemble the bolt without parts flying all over the shop. Rifle performed normally for well over the first 1075 rounds. Mis-fires began after the firing pin "clicked" without firing. Will probably ship it back to Savage since it's still under warranty.

Gunamonth and Milanuk: Got your postings after I did my second msg. Great info., I've made a hard copy for my present and future reference. A big thank you for your time and effort. I've found, over the years, that "things" are easier to take apart, than put back together. The "Magic Marker" identing will be used in the future, for all "Take aparts": great suggestion!

Savage Not firing. You may have a broken firing pin, You may have trash between the firing pin stop and the bolt head. You might have powder residue and trash under the cocking piece sleeve and the bolt body. Your firing pin may have powder residue between the main spring and the cocking piece lock washer. Your main bolt body screw may have come unscrewed. Your action may have shifted or gotten trash between the sear and the stock. There may be trash bewteen the cocking piece pin and the bolt body. The main spring may have broken.

If the barrel has not been removed then the headspacing is not likely the problem. Obviously your firing pin is dragging.

I would recomend rem oving the bolt and dissasembling it. Clean and inspect it thoroughly. Put it back together cleaned and lubricated well. If it does not fire them address the bolt processes one step at a time. Divide and conquer.

Broken firing pins do happen... one guy @ FCNC had his break while snapping in during prep time for the first relay @ 600yds.

May be way far off but my little brothers savage when I shoot it I have mis fires, I am used to regular triggers and I have a habit of only pulling the trigger on the sides not depressing the tab in the middle. He has done this several times also after shooting his other rifles then going back to his savage. I'm not familiar with the savages but I do know that when I don't depress the middle tab it just goes CLICK. Later,

Kirk

Ksmirk: No, you were right on! The "problem" was nothing more than not properly depressing the trigger tab. To verify that, I tried to duplicate the trouble with my Savage mdl 12bvss, and it too "clicked", when I had the finger pad not squarely on the face of the trigger. Thanks for the advice: so much to learn!
