I put both my Savage actions in Magpul Hunter stock - the only minor PITA is pulling the cheek riser to get the cleaning rod in through the chamber. I've become a fan of VV N133, my buddy reloads with Benchmark

I love my Savages! I have and have had many other brands. I can do all my own gunsmith work at my convenience on the Savages and I get great performance from them.
PS they are ugly until you see the groups on the target.

Usually swap factory barrel out with aftermarket from CBI or PacNor

204R is a great factory cartridge but the 20 Practical is right close to it

I like my savages. I have a savage 12fv in 204 that I picked up from cable around Black Friday many moons ago, one of those treat yourself Xmas presents. It was on sale at cabelas with a factory rebate and I had a gift card from a supplier, I was out the door less than $275. I dropped in a Boyd’s stock and this things shoots little bug hole groups. I have taken friends and clients on PD shoots and at the end of the day that 204 is voted most fun rifle of the day. It operates flawlessly and the speed of 204 gives the best aerials.

Like hotshot said I can do barrel, caliber and bolt head swaps on my own. My biggest complaint with the savages is the lack of aftermarket trigger support, I love my bigs N Andy and diamond tech triggers but to my knowledge they are not available for savages.

If you don’t already have a 223 I would really consider that same rifle in the 223, the barrel is in a 1:9. I have 2-223 barrels with the same twist and they very accurate with 40-53gr vmax. The 223 is easier to reload for as well, those .204 32gr bullets are pretty small. The 204 brings a whole new set of tools in some area’s as well, different cleaning rod, jags, powder funnel ect. Would I do another 20 cal, you bet. 32gr bullet at 4000fps plus on a p dog or whistle pig is just magic, SWACK!

I have 3 savages. All 3 are shooters. I have other rifles but I'm not going to say one bad thing about the accuracy of a Savage rifle. One reason is because I can't. If they don't shoot consistently I do not keep them. I have a 22 Hornet by savage with a laminated stock it shoots well and is a beautiful gun too!

A friend has one. Wish i could comment on accuracy, but he is not one to load to its potential. He gives up easy and just settles.

Had one, I think a model 12v heavy barrel 26 inch. Shot very well with my handloads.
I still have 3 others in different calibers all shoot very well. And I do change my own Barrels.
Bottom line go for it.

Thanks for the come backs guys. I think that I'm gonna go with it. I have other Savages and they shoot well. Especially my cheepo Dick's Sports that was a .243 and I put a Shilen 6Br barrel on (yes it feeds fine)

Gray420----Thanks for the tip on the powder funnel, I would have spilled powder all over my bench. I added it to my "TO BUY" list!

I have a Savage 223 Precision bolt action rifle with the MTD chassis stock that a friend gave me with a magazine that will take an OAL of 2.550". But the throat/ leade is to short to take advantage of it. But it does shoot very well in spite of it's short comings.

I have a model 12FV in 223. Its one of the cheap ones that Cabela's used to sell. It has no problems shooting hand loads under 1/2 moa. After a few years I swapped stocks on it. My only real complaint was the blind box magazine which was inconvenient at best for shooting PDs. I remedied that with an Oryx chassis and a 10 rnd AICS mag. Fantastic rifle. I have NO 20 cal experience but if you're content with the trigger and its replacment options, there's no reason to spend more money on something else.

Rick perhaps this picture would have helped to express your stance on this subject, which I do understand totally. This is a 204 btw and my idea of true beauty,form following function. Savages are known to shoot well and by all means Hip you should build one, the idea of the barrel nut probably helps in that accuracy detail. Mike I am sure you are kidding about Rick, after all he probably is one of the best loved and a great contributor here. Just had to say something all in love of course.

I have 4 Savage 110s, 1 12, 1 10 and all shoot great. I replace the tupperware stocks and triggers. My first was a 243 with wood stock back about 1980 and out of the box it shot .2" and after bedding it was one hole and won numerous club rifle matches.
My newest is a 12 F/TR that was the most difficult to get to shoot but its getting better. A seating depth test yesterday revealed .1" group. It will get better.
First thing is to bore scope the rifle!! I had a model 10 223 that had a bore that looked like a washboard and copper fouled in 2 shots from end to end. It is now a 20 Vartarg and shoot under .1"

Took my 12FV in 204 to the range yesterday, shooting 39SBK's over H322 and 35 Berger FBV's over N133. This was my first experience with N133 for this rifle. Yes, Savage triggers are not the best, but I couldn't have been happier with the results.
