Savage LRPV 6BR - Are You Happy?

I am considering purchasing a Savage LRPV in 6BR (1-8) and I would appreciate feedback from owners or past owners. I am not new to shooting but I am new to the 6BR. This rifle will be for range work and honing my rifle cartridge hand-loading skills. It may also get some use for woodchucks and just for fun competition.

If there are other rifles or options you think are important I would certainly like to hear them. I was also thinking of the Shilen barreled action route. I would like an accurate rifle.

Many thanks.

I had a LRPV that started life as a 22-250, then I rebarreled it to a 6br. If I was you I would get ahold of Jim at Northlanders and get the action, a criterion barrel and the HS stock. It'll cost about the same but you'll way more gun.

I had never owned a Savage when I started shooting varmint for score at the local gun clubs. I won a few matches with my Rem 700 .223, but when a guy shot a perfect 200 at 200 yards with a stock Savage LRPV 6BR, I went straight home and ordered one. I could only get the dual port in 12 twist, but it shoots lights out with the 80 grain Berger FB. That can be verified by going to the benchrest central forums and typing in my last name in the search box. Look through some of the factory center-fire results. I just got my wife started with an 8 twist 6BR LRPV. She's only shot two matches with it so far and is still getting used to the trigger, but it shoots almost as good as my 12 twist in my load development groups.

I don't think you can go wrong with a 6BR LRPV.

I have a 8 twist Savage LRPV that I use for basically the same things you do steve3 and I do like it. Mine required a bit of tweaking, for one thing the accutrigger on mine needed adjusting because when you would cycle the bolt you sometimes couldn't pull the trigger, it would lock. After researching this problem the solution was to heavy up the trigger pull a bit and the problem went away. I considered an after market trigger but haven't done that yet, I'm not sure I will. The second issue I had with my LRPV was that it would throw a shot about every third or fourth round. After trying different loads and other things I finally got out the loupe 30x and under magnification I found a small defect on the crown at about eleven o'clock. I used a round headed brass screw and some fine compound to carefully hone the defect out. The rifle grouped much better after that with no more flyers. You can buy a prefit replacement barrel, but I am satisfied with the way my Savage barrel turned out. If I were to buy a LRPV today I would take along a Loupe and check the crown before I bought it. I do this now on most rifles I purchase as a rule. Ron...

I agree with Hoier
Find a Savage action and order a prefIt criterion from Jim or a McGowen.
I have two 6br one with a Criterion one with a McGowen.

Both group better than my buddies factory LRPV. The hand lapped barrels are worth the effort. My guns are pawn shop actions with rifle basix2 triggers

It won't cost you anymore to build it and possibly less. The out come will be a better one IMHO

Steve,
I have and shoot both the Savage Model 12 Benchrest Target Rifle and the Model 12 VLPDBM, both of which I shoot off the Benchrest position. I've had both of them for a little over two years. Frankly, I am amazed how accurately both shoot with whatever make of barrel (both new and out of the box) both have on them. Now I do have a Kreiger (1:8) MG barrel on order (for the 6mmbr) as the bullet count is going up. And I might add that "wait" time for both Kreiger and Shilen is well...ridiculous (Jan 2014) on the Kreiger. And funny you mention the "extractor problem". Not had one with my 6mmbr. But I just received the replacement extractor, spring and detent ball from Savage (at no charge) as they mysteriously disappeared while at the range this past week after some higher pressure load testing. BTW, the Model 12 VLPDBM is a 223. After replacing those parts, the rifle shoots GREAT! But for their accuracy right out of the box, I wouldn't hesitate for a second to buy the rifle you are looking at.

Good Morning,

I have the LRPV 8 twist in 6BR, and am very happy with it. I won shooter of the year in the 600 yard factory BR division at Bridgeville two years ago shooting it. Best 5 shot ag was 2.1" and overall agg was 2.9". Not to shabby for an out of the box factory rig. I don't think you can go wrong with either the LRPV or the BR model 12.

I won today and my wife Debbie took second with our 6BR LRPVs.

They flat out shoot. Come shoot against us the weekend of July 20th at Terry Balding's balloon shoot in Wisconsin! It's 300,400 and 500 yards with tiebreakers at 600! If South Dakota can't do it, Wisconsin can!

I have a Savage LRPV 6BR (1-8) maybe 2 years old bought new. (Ser#starts with "H"). Without question the most accurate factory rifle I own or have ever owned. Bought two boxes of Lapua's cartridges 105gr. Even though I reload I needed the ammo so I would have the brass. Figured it would give me a good starting mark. I shot a few 5 shot groups with this rifle and factory ammo and for the first time in over 45 years I had serious doubts whether my hand loads could even match, never mind do better, than what this rifle shot. In the end I never did match the 105's.....I did beat it with 95gr Sierra's. By the way mine is a right bolt left port.

it's a good gun but you mentioned Shilen action and barrel, that would be far far better I have both Savage and Shilen, their trigger is nice down to 2 ounces, action far smoother it is built by Stiller , you can get a barrel with nut or have it shouldered that will allow you a larger contour, it is a perfect fit in any Rem 700 stock.

fm1947 - Thanks for answering.

Did you have Shilen build you a 6BR. Can I ask what neck you used, was it the .272. I want to be able to shoot the heavier/longer bullets.

Can you also tell me what you did stock wise? I would like to go with a bull barrel and their barrel nut. Can I still use a regular Remington 700 stock.

I have been corresponding with Shilen regarding a barreled action.

Many thanks.

I have one that I had shilen build it is a 30 BR shilen action and I have another I did with nut in 6mm br and I swich barrels on that one I also have 6.5x47 L for that action, You can go with nut and bull barrel no problem , and yes Remington stock is just fine, I also have a rem 700 with a shouldered barrel in a HS Precision Stock, and y shilen is in a Mc millan stock benchrest 3inch wide flat bottom, you can do anything you want with the shilen action as you can the savage, shilen is a great custom action, made by Jerry Stiller, can't go wrong there. As far as stock with bull barrel , that barel is almost a straight taper starts at a little over one inch not much , down to muzzle of 1 inch, go to Stocky's Stock see what they have in a Rem 700 by HS Precision and what the size the barrel channel is , it's a good stock I have 3 of them or you can have on made at McMillan, go to McMillan and they have an area of stocks already made look under Specials click stocks you will see some for Rem 700 , think down the road and have the barrel channel done for 1.250 you may want to go bigger with out nut later, your thought of Shilen action and nut bull barrel is a great start.
