Savage LRPV .223

I recently bought a Savage LRPV .223 with the 7 twist barrel. I am trying to work a load with the Hornady 75 Amax. I have tried Varget, Rl-15, Tac, H 4895 with no luck. I have loaded c.o.a.l. from 2.39' to in the lands with no luck. Does anyone have experience with this rifle and this bullet? Looking for a place to start. I realize the 7 twist was designed for heavier bullets but have 600 75 Amaxs. I'm running out of ideas. The gun will shoot Berger 73 bthp like a house on fire. Thanks, Wade

Wade, if you have given all of those powders a real honest, and accurate ladder test try, and Im not sure what 'in to the lands' means in numbers, so my only suggestion would be to try a .010 jam, some bullets/powder/rifle combinations like that. But back off the powder a bit at first when you do.,I had to say that, its the law. Just kidding)
The twist wont bother that bullet, it should be fine.
I would think, if it will shoot in your rifle, it would do it with Varget, R-15 or 4895, so I agree with your choice of powders.
It is possible your rifle doesn't like that bullet, so if you cant make it shoot, sell them.
It sound like you know what your doing, and I dont have any magic tricks, so good luck.
PS: My 6BR 1/8' wont shoot Berger 90g either.
Mike.

Thanks for the info. The groups are stringing vertical on all loads and I can't figure it out. I read an article once about the 3 screw guns and removing the middle screw. I'm wondering if that would make a difference. I'm not sure if the middle screw is pillar bedded as the other 2. After I got the gun I removed the screws and torqed to 65 in lbs. Just reaching for straws. Thanks, Wade

The three screw LRPV actions hate the rear screw to be tight. Tighten the middle and front stock screws and loosen the rear screw to the point it is about just barrely touching the trigger guard.

This should cure your verticals. I sue a touch of fingernail polish to keep the rar screw from falling out and getting lost.

i have had really good luck with my savage and 75 amax using h335 @ 22.5 grains with rem br primers neck turn and and neck sized average under .75 but i am new to the game so i expect that group to get smaller also that is a one in nine twist hope that helps

I agree with MikeM, maybe it just doesn't like them. Seems you've put a reasonable effort in and used the correct powders for the weight of projectile. And since you say the 73 Berger works great, you know the gun is capable.

BTW, the LRPV has an aluminum bedding block in the stock. The laminate stocks are the ones with pillar bedding.

I have a Savage 12 bvsss 223 in a single shot, this gun loves the 75 Amax, 25 Varget, 205 primer, bullet touching the lands. accuracy is beyond what I expected from a factory rifle that was only bedded, this gun has fired quite a few 5 shot groups under 1/2' AT 200YDS.

Another little plus after you do all of the other suggestions is to free the tang area of the action where it touches the stock. If you can pass a dollar bill all the way around the tang area, that is all that is needed.

Try longer bullets with the 7 twist.

Savage model 11 BGT - 20 inch 1-9 barrel. Hornady 75 grain A-Max with Win SR primers, 23.3 grain H4895 set to 2.390 OAL - laser accruate.

Read this thread!!! - http://6mmbr.websitetoolbox.com/post?id=3457513&trail=8

I've been researching A LOT on bedding savage actions lately, having problems my self!), and recently learned some interesting info for the newer actions...

As Travelor mentioned, 3-screw actions are picky with the rear screw torque, and are even more picky about the bedding job. Relieve the rear tang, from the middle of the 3rd screw hole to the back of the action), and make sure anything in front of the recoil lug is floated,NOT bedded), including the barrel nut. It makes the difference between shooting 1' groups and shooting 1-hole groups.

Look!!! Don't drive your self crazy. Sell the 75gr Amax's and take the money and buy the 80gr Amax. I have a savage with 8 twist Shilen on it. Shots Sierra 80gr MK bullets in the.100's and 200's all day long at 100. Going an a PD hunt this week was trying to get 60gr Nosler to shot great but will not. Thought it like 80gr so I bought 80gr Amam for $89 for 600 on Mid south. Yesterday Shoot a .285 at 200 and a .650 at 300. Three shots each. 24.6 gr of Varget and a Winchester SRP. Don't waste the powder, primers, bullets and time with the 75's The 7 twist will shoot the 90gr Sierra's
