Savage LRPV 22/250

Hi guys. I am thinking about getting a Savage LRPV in 22/250 with a 1:9 twist. I was wondering if any guys out there have one in this calibre/twist combo and if they can give any insight into build quality, issues, suggestions etc. Thanks in advance.

Action is built like a tank. Accutrigger is a complaint point. Barrel heavy and overall weight of the rifle is considerable - much better bench gun as you won't want to carry it far. Accuracy is hard to predict...could be sub 1/2 inch but could just be sub moa. Some barrels foul badly. Excellent stock with CNC machined aluminum bedding block. Savage flexibility allows easy barrel change and the bolt head can be swapped out too.

What do you plan to use it for?

Planning to use it spotlighting from a vehicle and maybe punching paper on occasions. If the accuracy is similar to the reports I've read it should be good.

Have you considered a 6BR ? Longer barrel life and easy to tune, they just plain shoot.

I have a couple of the PTA actioned rifles. Are they perfect? Not exactly, but they both shot good right out of the box. One of the barrels was a little rough initially, telling by feel, not by a bore scope, but I shot it a little and used some bore paste on it for a while, and it's a lot smoother and cleans a little easier now. The barrel still shot good (pretty consistently below a 1/2" CTC). The triggers aren't perfect either, but they sure are good for factory triggers. I do have a Sav 2 trigger in one of them and it is certainly better than the factory one. It's nice to be able to work on your own stuff. I would get one in 22/250, the barrel will shoot, maybe not spectacularly, that's part of the adventure, and when the thing is shot out, there are plenty of people making reasonably high quality pre-fits for it.

Funny I just looked up the build date on my lrpv 22-250..2007...it's been trouble free. the factory 1-12 tw barrel shot sub .5 @ 100 m from day one. this was the 1st one at my club shoots. this rifle shot so well it sure sold some Savage's. I sold the stock barrel @ 500 rds and bought a criterian 1-9 tw ..mistake..I can't get the criterian to shoot nearly as good as the stock Savage. the Savage barrel was a pia to clean..lots of patches.the criteran cleans easily and shoots ok for varmint ..no good for score

As stated here by another poster, get a 6BR. The 22-250's are okay but once you have a 6BR you will have one for life. Much better in wind with better choice of bullets. Barrel life is better with the 6 too. The Savage rifles are built very solid. I have a couple Savage rifles and they are tack drivers but you need to break them in correctly and do due diligence when cleaning them. This model rifle is heavy but so what. If you are shooting sage rats you are sitting in one place a lot with a rest so the weight is not a negative factor. Go for it.

Barrel AND brass life.

Saw a 6BR PD gun (that loads were of a reasonable, not max velocity) get so hot the wood stock started smoking just forward of the recoil lug. Charred a free floated stock! Still shoots 1/4 MOPD. Well, AFTER getting the carbon out, in fact the carbon may have been what saved it. Man did that thing have some carbon in the first 6" ;) Do that to an already firecracked throat 22-250 its a tomato stake.
