Savage Lettering & headspace

If this gun is intended to be shot in competition, do the rules allow for any barrel replacement?

UBR Factory class for example, specifically disallows a barrel swap unless done at the mfg and a letter to prove it, from the maker. Any signs of a barrel swap not done by the maker puts the gun into the next higher class.
Nowhere in the UBR equipment rules does it state that the factory marking must index at the nine o'clock position. It states that any barrel replaced must have a letter from the manufacturer. The rules are vague but I think the intent was to prevent a custom chambered or aftermarket barrel from being used in the factory class. I'm not sure it was intended to keep a shot out barrel from being replaced with a factory takeoff barrel. If that is the intent it is unenforceable because how is it determined the barrel was replaced with a takeoff at the manufacturer or in my basement?

I'm not going to say what Danny will decide one way or the other but you should go back and read the Ubr rules page again. It clearly states that the barrel cannot be changed and that any sign of that Barrel being changed moves it to the next higher class. It even goes on to say, barrels cannot be replaced by another barrel even of the same manufacturer.

I agree with what you are saying. As written I just don't think the rules are enforceable with any consistency because it can't be determined if the barrel was replaced with a like barrel and if it was, what is the advantage? I agree with you that factory should be factory. We certainly don't want to get into an equipment race in the entry level class which is where a lot of our new shooters will come from.

Truth be told, factory class could potentially be the most expensive class to be competitive in, if people buy and sell until finding a truly competitive factory rifle. It's still a very good test class for a new shooter to see what the game is all about. Most of them move up pretty soon, but not all.

thats what i was thinking also after i looked into it. potentialy alot more effort to as instead of just changing a barrel youre trying out new guns and working with them more often.

If you put a wrench in the action or on the barrel its not factory anymore. This type stuff is what keeps new shooters away. Dont be a cheater and dont try to find loopholes
I agree Dusty, but if rules allow it...My interpretation of the UBR rule is that it is not allowed in that particular sanctioning body's rules.

It is true that any such rule is difficult to enforce and the barrel engraving location is about as good as anything, imo.

Lots of rules are difficult to enforce, particularly where there is a willingness to cheat and manipulate said rules.
This should NEVER happen but unfortunately there will always be that very tiny group of small individuals that want to win at all costs. There is no place in our sport for those people, PERIOD!

Cheaters never win...They will always be LOSERS!
