Savage head spacing, rechambering issue

I am taking my barrel to the local gunsmith to be rechambered from 308 to 300 win mag. heas asking me to purchase a set of headspace gauges but saysI dont have to bring the receiver. Im Kinda confused. Ive rebarreled three dozen of my own Savages and understand the head spacing. My question is when he rechamberes it does the Belted part of the brass go inside the chamber or does it ride/rest on the outside on the barrel....Thanks for any help

The belt is inside the barrel/part of the new chamber cut. The amount of case that protrudes behind the barrel is based on the (average) depth of Savage bolt face(s), which finally headspaced when barrel nut is tightened.

He is cutting an accurate depth chamber for you, but leaving you to mount the barrel and final headspace correctly, which will be easy when you get the barrel and headspace gauges back from him.

The belt does go inside of the barrel versus sitting on the rim of it. If it were me, I would want the action and lug too to assemble it. Not saying you can't, just my warm fuzzies putting together a barreled action.

Maybe it is just me, but if this guy does not have the headspace gauges for an H&H belted magnum, I would go someplace else. This would be one of the more common gauges in use.
