Savage GRS 6mm Creedmoor

Anybody have any experience with one of these? Been eyeing one for years and haven't taken the plunge yet. I've got many precision match/target/hunting rifles, but nothing I would consider suitable for the tactical style PRS realm, or even a true blue varmint rifle for that matter. All Savages tend to shoot really well, and I have heard the same out of the GRS. The stock seems to be where folks either love them or hate them.

Any comments you care to give would be appreciated. Thank you.

I had that rifle chambered in 6.5 creedmoor for about 2 years. Overall it was a good gun, and I was able to shoot a 6 inch group at 800 yards with some 143 ELD-X sitting on top of H4350. The stock was very nice inregards to the adjustable cheek piece and length of pull. The grip however was something that was very comfortable when seated at a bench or standing and leaning on a barracks but shooting prone it always put my wrist at a very uncomfortable postion. I just sold it to build a custom rifle and purchased KRG bravo stock which I absolouty love!

@257Roberts: Hopefully this is a helpful comment. While I don't have the savage, I do have a Howa 1500 in 6mm Creedmoor that is in that same GRS Berserk stock. I liked the stock so much that, over time, I have put two other actions in them.

First, the Berserk stock is somewhat unique to GRS in that it was their first polymer stock. They did a good job of molding a much more dense fiberglass into the action screw/bolt areas. This does make the decision to pillar bed the action more challenging, and, possibly unnecessary. Additionally, the forestock is somewhat flexible. Not so much that there is any danger of the stock coming into contact with the barrel but there is more movement of the stock when a bipod is attached than there is with a laminated or wood stock. That said the Berserk feels exactly like other GRS stocks like the Sporter and X-Eater.

The next part is my opinion. I really enjoy the ergonomics of GRS stocks. They feel great from either prone or the bench, the two ways I have used mine. I like the adjustability of cheek rest and the length of pull and if the Savage doesn't come with it there is an accessory part you can add to raise and lower the butt pad as well. There is also a thicker recoil pad that is available if you choose. The stock has a good finish and there are some rubber part glued around the hand grip and forestock. I have shot the rifle in pouring rain and appreciated the sureness of the grip offered by those rubber grips. You can see the glue seam where they are glued in my stock. Not a big deal but noticeable. I'd say if you like the ergonomics, you will enjoy the the rifle.

The one thing I have found that I don't like in certain circumstances, and you can work around this but, if you free recoil the rifle you will have to learn to get your palm out of the way of of the hand grip as it recoils or it will make contact and possibly interfere with the rifle's tracking.

Hope that helps a bit,

Digging up and old post here.

Has anyone ever inletted a polymer stock to accept a hand stop rail? If I were to get one of these, I would love to shoot it slung prone at times. I inletted a wood stock myself once with a chisel and a dremel and epoxied the rail in place. It wasn't terrible, but I am not sure I have the tools to do a polymer stock myself. I could possibly use my drill press and the dremel again...

What about the size of this stock? Ive read a couple places that it isnt that nice for shorter people. Im only 5'9" and I run move of my guns in the 12.75-13.25" LOP range depending on the stock. Also, I run a short length handstop due to my shorter arms, but if I have to put the rail in myself, I can adjust where I put that.

Thanks for any info.
