Savage F T/R Throat

Any Savage F T/R Model 12 Target,.308. shooters out there?
I want to have the throat lengthen so I can load out some Berger 185 jugs.

Any suggestions on how much I should go or how to determine how much throat to add?

Thx

djdc: Load a dummy round with the bullet of your choice, seated in the case neck where you want it, and give it to the 'smith. He can then use a throating only reamer to increase your throat length to whatever is needed.

Buy a throating reamer kit for your caliber from PTG, with t-handle and some good cutting fluid, cuts like butter. You can do this with barrel on the action. I did it on a savage .223 barrel worked awesome.

I currently Compete in Ftr with the savage FTR 308 factory barrel and have just recently switched to the 185's Juggernauts I am able to seat mine .025 off the lands using Alliant 2000MR powder with plenty of room am able to throw them at 2900 fps It's working well with factory 30IN Barrel Hope this Helps

I agree with jhop, I've started shooting the 185juggs in a factory savage 12 ftr and with 0.015 jump they shoot great. My records show 2.234 base-to-ogive touches the lands and is 2.885 COAL. Yours seems unusually long. Drew

I rechecked my measurements and I see where the differences are..

If subtract the length of the comparator, I get the same base to ogive ( 2.235) you get and my base to tip is 2.890.

jhop28.. I'll look in to the 2000MR.
I've been running about 41.0 gn of 4060 and all I can get is around 2650fps. My primers are starting to crater so I stopped adding powder.

Glad that is cleared up. I'm using Lapua and Varget and get about 2800. 2900 is ludicrous speed and is well out of reach for me. Drew

My base to ogive is 2.223 but I wouldn't use that until you measure your head space and the 2000mr will give you extra velocity with out any pressure signs I am using lapua Lr brass and 210m primers

Out of a stock savage f/tr 308 most have good luck with 42 varget 20 or less off lands with the 185 . You cant hit a higher node with the factory freebore. This load is great out to 800 but will let you down at 1K.

To answer the question, run the throat out about .140".

The downside is, forget about running 155.5s in that barrel.
