I have a Savage action from a stainless model 220 slug gun. I was told this is the same action that is used in the 116 centerfire models. What, if anything, can I do with it? I’m especially interested in smokeless muzzleloaders but am open to any and all suggestions. Thanks, Greg

I asked the same question on Savage shooters.com.

I was told emphatically that it would not convert to a centerfire configuration.
I looked it over inside and out and I believe I could have made it work with a bolt face change and a couple of other small modifications but in the end I decided to leave it as a 220.

I bought a 220 Savage slug gun new last year for an out of state deer hunt. While the accuracy is pretty good, it is a pretty crude working action. I personally wouldn't build anything off of one of those actions.

Good, leave it that way no matter what gets suggested otherwise.

Not with this action, it is set up for the low pressure operation of shotgun shells.

The smokeless muzzleloaders are built on modern bolt action receivers for a good reason, high operating pressure. Leave it alone.
