savage ejector removal

i switched from 6mm creed to a 6mmbr and shot case doesn't eject or extract so im thinking of just removing ejector and seeing if it extracts ok seeing i dont need brass flying anyway.... this is probably a dumb question but once i pound pin out and remove spring and ejector do i leave pin out or tap it back in ...thanks barry

There’s a small pin perpendicular to the bolt on the bolt head.
push the ejector in a bit and drive the pin out.
the common ejector/extractor kits are pretty helpful for the savage

You stated that the case didn’t extract or eject. It’s certainly not going to eject if it’s not being extracted from the chamber. I would try to determine why it’s not extracting before removing the ejector.

I would suspect the extractor is not functioning correctly. Is the extractor slipping over the case head and into the extraction groove when the bolt is closed ? Try disassembling and cleaning the extractor. Sometimes they get gummed up.

I have had the sliding plate extractor in a savage Target action stick twice, I thought it was "surgically" clean until I removed it and found foreign material in the seat for the spring loaded ball under the plate. Disassemble the extractor from the bolt inside a gallon Ziplok bag unless you want to some quality time looking for the ball and spring.

Have a Savage action or two. Some of them drop the cartridge others don’t. I have cleaned as mentioned. I have tried the ball swapping trick, better but no complete cure. I have shortened ejector springs, once again better but no cure. This is with BR an 221 length cases.

Don’t know if a modified or new extractor would fix or not.

Short/shorter cases don't work in a Savage with the extractor. Remove the extractor, leave it, the pin and spring out and pick each case off the bolt head. No chasing brass, ever!!

Some cases with a thicker rim, don't fit under the extractor lip enough and give problems extracting the case. You or your gunsmith can very carefully mill some metal from that lip, give it a little more opening to fit over the case rim and it will extract much better.

I have a Savage "Target" action in a Dasher (RBLP). I removed the ejector and found it to work great. It never ejected well anyway and I only shoot from a bench, so my cases now never get dirty. This winter I did have @Grimstod "fill" the ejector hole in the bolt head, but haven't shot it since (I doubt there will be any problems).

My Savage PTA bolt got the full Grimstod treatment. It was the best money I’ve spent on a Savage.

The problem the OP is experiencing is common with short cases, such as BR and Fireball, with spring loaded ejectors on most 2 lug actions. The case mouth clears the chamber before the rear of the case can be held in the bolt face by the RH side of the receiver. The ejector then pushes the case mouth into the lug recess and allows the case head to escape from the extractor. You get extraction from the chamber, but the case falls off the bolt face as you retract the bolt and you've got to dig out the empty. Remington solved this problem by changing the location of the extractor and ejector for the Fireball case family. Without a Rem. type solution, the simplest fix is to just remove the ejector and remove the cases by hand. This problem has really nothing to do with whether the extractor is working or not. This issue has been discussed numerous times on this site and others.

I wonder if installing another ejector at a different location on the bolt face would carry the case above the lug raceway. Seems like it would work to me. Just thinking out loud.
