savage edge

You may want to check out www.savageshooters.com

The Edge will use any Savage round back two piece bases, but if you desire a 1 piece base the only company presently making such a thing is EGW.

IMO the Edge is no comparison to the Stevens 200, and for the money difference I would not even consider the Edge.

Having 2 Steven's, one being a new .308 I just received for an early B-Day gift from my Dad, I will say they are a much nicer rifle than most give them credit for. They are essentially a pre-accutrigger Savage with a gray synthetic stock. The stock could use some improvement as well as the trigger, but they are definitely a nice rifle for the money.

As for the Edge, they have been reported to be very accurate (.75" 100yd groups) and the stock does feel a bit nicer than the Steven's in some aspects, though is still not much stiffer. The action does look as though it should be very stiff, as the top is solid but I am not a fan of the recoil lug system. It sits in the stock and fits in a slot between the barrel nut and action. I would like to pick one up at some point just to see how it really shoots, as it does seem to be a nice rifle, and the $260 price tag at the local shop is attractive. Another 30-06 never hurt anyone! I am also confused as they don't list a long/short action, so it seems as they may be the same length, though I am unsure of this.

As for rings, 82boy has covered all I have seen as well. If you are planning to buy one, it would be nice to have a real review of the rifle and it's true accuracy potential.

Between the Edge and the Steven's, I would say it comes down to intended use. If it's to be used as is, the Edge would probably be a nice rifle if it's lives up to it's accuracy claim. If you plan to customize the rifle, the Steven's is what I would go with. It uses most all of the same parts as the Savage, and is going to have a huge advantage in aftermarket support as it has been around far longer than the Edge.

If you could machine the front of the action flat and do away with recess for the recoil lug and use a standard type lug, I would be more inclined to buy one, as I don't see that system as being nearly as good as the standard lug system.

And don't get me wrong, the Steven's is an accurate rifle as well. I have only put 50 rounds though mine so far, the first 20 being Federal Fusion 180gr. I have been averaging 1.25" or better at 100yds with handloads, as the first 20 were basically break-in. I was only using a sand bag for the front and was just using a load pulled from my manual that looked good. I plan to do some real load work and trying to improve that, as I feel it was far from an optimal load for the rifle.

Either way, you will end up with a good rifle. The Edge is going to be hard to beat for price, as it is cheaper than any other bolt gun I have seen. And it's a Savage, they have been making accurate rifles for a long time, so I would think they have an idea as to what they are doing. You just can't beat $260-$280 for an accurate bolt gun, and you can buy the package deal and get a 3-9x scope on the Edge for around $300 or a little more. That's a sweet deal in my book for a ready to hunt rifle.

The guy I spoke with at the gun shop told me he got to shoot the Edge scoped combo in .308 when they first came in (probably the scoped one now in the used rack!) as he likes to try most new rifles he stocks. He said it was very accurate, a good deal for the price and shot well with several factory loads from 150-180 grains. He also stated it handled similar to the Steven's, and the stock dimensions feel similar though the textures are different. He has always been very honest with me, so when he say's he wouldn't hesitate a bit to take one into the woods with complete confidence, I believe him.
