Savage centerfeed reciever/scope mounting

How many of you brothers of the barrel nut have noticed mounting a scope rail or two peice mount results in not enough scope travel to compensate for the reciever being lower in the rear or front depending on skippy sanding the reciever to give it their patented 80 grit finish. This is my second reciever with the mount not working without shimming the rail or mount at least .020 of an inch. I just put together a 6mm rem bull barrel gun using this reciever and it shot low at 50 yds by 4 inches with the scope out of adjustment.How much should I shim it,I am thinking like .020-.030? I will wait for your feedback. Thanks

I have two small shanks that are off ~10MOA high. (better than low for me!!) My target action is spot on. I bought a BVSS the other day, and the area around the rear action bolt hole was sanded flat. This caused the rear pillar bolt to stress the action about .020". I had to monkey around with the rear pillar to correct it.

Not a problem with the 2 FP10s I have own or the 3 others I had at one time.

I think a .030 shim should give you 20 moa, or real close.

I've never had this problem with a Savage, with those 2 large cut outs are you sure the action is straight and true?

Just as a followup to this, I screwed around with one of my Savages yesterday, pulled off the factory barrel to have a look at what was going on with it shooting high. Well first of all, the barrel nut was ridiculously tight. It probably took a good 125lbs+ of torque to break it loose. (and heat/penetrating oil) I surfaced the barrel nut and end of receiver on a surface plate to make sure they were flat. (I'm not saying trued like you would in a lathe, just flat) I installed a new Callahan recoil lug, headspaced the barrel and set the nut to a good "snug" fit maybe 40lbs. Voila! Now it shoots "straight," within a couple MOA of scope zero. I don't know for sure what the cure was but I'm going to assume most of the problem was in the cheesy factory recoil lug.

One more followup... I replaced the original recoil lug with a Callahan on my other Savage small shank yesterday. This one with a Shilen 6BR barrel on it. This gun, like the other was also shooting high with a zero MOA scope rail and the scope dials centered. Well now for the 2nd time, a nice flat lug dropped the point of impact substantially, about 13MOA on this one. I don't know if it could be said that this is some sort of trend, but if you have a Savage that is shooting whacky one direction or another, I would at least consider throwing the stock recoil lug as far as you can into the weeds before you worry about scope base shims and all that.

I bedded the scope one-piece scope rails on all three of my Savages. Since in all three of my guns the rear was lower than it needed to be, I bedded only the rear. I just screw down the front solidly, and the rear only tight enough to hold it in place and squeeze out any excess JB Weld.
