savage build help

The thing about Savage their somewhat geared towards the “ do it your selfer’s “
if your incline to. A lot of options on prefit barrels
Those fits all barrels work good for varmint shooting, but I would never build my competition guns with a pre fit anything. They will always get their best chance with an uncut barrel, chambered by my choice of gunsmith. If it's a Savage, I'll use Fred at Sharp Shooter, I think he gives me my best Chace, and knows how to time and true a Savage better than anyone!

Your happy with your results, I’m happy with my results to each his own

Seems like the last barrel I got from SSS was outsourced from a barrel maker??
That's like his stocks. Built and bought from someone else and he ended up being the bad guy if they didn't come in on time or had a problem?

The only stocks he sells he makes himself. Most are from laminated blanks he buys, then he he cuts to the style you request, and inlets them for the action you supply.

As for barrels, you can buy anything you want, but every rifle he has built me, I obtain the barrel, and deliver them to him.

I'm sure if you want an inexpensive varmint rig, he will accommodate you. But if you want it to shoot good enough to compete, I alway provide the blank of my choice.

We are starting another rifle, and he is cutting the Walnut blank I provide, and laminating it himself, every other layer will have the grain turned 90 degrees from the layer on each side of it. But again, don't expect to pay the same as a stock he cuts out of a oversized blank!

Full service gunsmiths will accommodate you in any price range you choose, but don't bs yourself into believing you can have a totally custom gun with the very best components for the price of a profit barrel, stopped on an action you don't want to pay to have trued and timed, then stuck into a pre fit stock, and shoot like one that is fully customized and accursed to the limit.

I'd suggest a 6BR for competition. And a Sharp Shooter Supply laminated Varmint stock if flat bottom is out. 1-10 twist for 80 to 95 grain bullets, or 1-13 for under 70 grain. My Axis uses a Sharp Shooter trigger, if you can find one. The 243 is a good choice for longer range Varmint, but the 6BR is my choice for target use, easily under .250" moa!
