Savage BR12 bolt hard unlock

I have a Savage BR12 . Was originally a .308 , but had re-barreled to a .284 . Problem is when raising the bolt after firing a round , I have to give it a little "bump up" at the top of stroke for lugs to completely clear and unlock . It does it with new or used brass . Brass has no marks on it and is not loaded "hot" . Case is not swelling up . Unfired rounds are smooth going in and out , no problem , just after been fired . I use Peterson brass , 180gr Berger Hybrid with 50.8 gr of H4350 , 2850FPS . I have been told that this is a characteristic symptom of a Savage bolt . Any info would be appreciated . Thanks

It's possible that when you rebarreled, you didn't get the headspace right and the front of the bolt is scraping on the breech of the barrel.

You might look up the Bolt Lift Kit from Nate Lambeth. I installed one of those and it reduced the force required to lift the bolt.

I have a F12 palma it opens as smooth as glass.. lighten up your load then see what happens 1st..lug area clean. lugs been greased, bore scope. screw out barrel reheadspace...they r hard to open with hot loads..was running 54 grs re26 in mine hard bolt lift... went to 7828 easy bolt lift with a heavier bullet 65284...now my f12 6xc had some hard bolt lift with horny 105 bthp's but they have a longer bearing surface so they have to be loaded lighter..108 berger target shoot great, same load, light bolt lift, less bearing surface, less pressure

Mark,
This is a inherent issue with the Savage bolt design. You can install a roller bearing kit to alleviate the problem. Search the market place forums for "Savage Bolt Lift Kit by Grimstod" Ben will also install the kit if you are unable to.
