Savage bolt

Brother bought a 223 barrel to replace a .22-250 barrel that has been shot out on their LRPV. He needs a .223 bolt or bolt head.

Any idea where he can purchase a bolt/bolt head for his LRPV for a .223 Remington?

Please no SSS references, he tried to order a stock through them and after waiting 8 months for delivery, he cancelled his order because of no delivery.

Also no go with Savage, wouldnt sell to him due to headspacing issues. He has the tools necessary to cover/assess the headspacing issue, so any other suggestions are welcomed.

Midway sells stripped boltheads. You will need to get the ejector, ejector spring, and the keeper pin. Sorry I don't know the exact technical name of the parts. You can call Lisa at Sharp Shooter Supply and she will hook you up. You might have to call several times if it is busy. You can get all the parts from SSS.

Luck, Tim

kyreloader,

Kevin Rayhill has them complete

Whether its chambered for .223 or .22-250 or even .308!. The model 12 LRPV's all use the same Ejector, Ejector Retaining Pin, Ejector Spring, Extractor, Extractor Dent Ball, and Extractor Spring. There's word going around that they have been changing the diameter for the ejector retaining pin for added strength.

Only thing different is the Bolt body, firing pin, and bolt head its self. MidwayUSA, Another possibility is Brownells.

If you are a paying member on Savage Shooters Forum you could get someone on there to trade yours for the one you need. Sorry to break it to you but Fred and Lisa are great people and SSS is the best place to purchase a complete bolt head.

If you really want a quality bolt, PT&G has them in .701. The sloppy Savage bolts are .696. The PT&G bolts are turned from tool steel. The Savage bolt bodies are drawn over an mandrel then chrome plated. PT&G also has fluted models.

Fred and Lisa may be good people, but from my experience, are not good business people. To order a product/stock and them not deliver the stock is one thing, but to not answer a phone is unexcusable.

I have two 12F rifles and Fred has tuned one and installed an Evolution trigger. The other will be shipped to SSS at the end of February. It is true that they sometimes do not answer the phone. Lisa does all the shipping and office work and Fred will be busy in the shop with machines running. If Lisa is out at UPS, likely Fred will not answer.

After I shipped the rifles, the wait was a little more than a month but that included the Christmas holidays. My experience with SSS has been positive and I am shipping another rifle to them. I found that email is the most reliable way to communicate with Lisa. She usually responds quickly.

====================================
I have been dealing with Fred and Lisa for years. (See Gun of
The Week #40) The two of them are very busy running a
high volume
international business and are often at the mercy of their
suppliers. They sell their stocks over seas and they sell a lot
of them, so they often have them on back order from their
supplier. Fred has built five guns for me, and I am very happy
with them. However, I had to wait a year for each of them.
I have know some guys to wait three or four years for some custom guns with checkering, engraving, etc. A while ago
Lisa was sick with the Flu for a week and Fred can't work and
answer the phone, so things back up fast. The two of them
work very hard to keep every one happy and I think most of
their customers are happy.:)

How much would you have to pay someone to answer your phone?

If I had an international business, I could pay minimum wage to have someone answer a phone and take messages that could be returned.

This is the only business that poor customer service is acceptable to some.

I love the SSS stuff too...but if you put any value your time at all...you will find them frustrating to do business with. Unless you are lotto lucky, you will spend hours trying to reach them on the phone to give them your dollars. I've spent hours cumulatively over the last couple days dialing and listening to their busy signal over the last two days. If my time was money, their products are getting pretty darned expensive. And hey, sometimes, on some of their items, it is worth it to me, I admit it. Take the day off from work, and program your redial button.

When I have a choice--All of my barrels, stocks, and gunsmith needs are now met by Stockade. Some of the small parts from him too, or I just lump them onto my midway or brownells orders. Kevin has someone answer the phone (novel concept huh) and is often willing to speak on the phone himself.

Thanks for the heads up on the PTG bolt bodies above! I've been trying to order one from SSS...but if PTG will answer the phone, I have some business for them.

I agree with the earlier post. Midway sells the heads, use your existing springs and extracter. Then, if you want spares, order the springs and extracters form Savage.
Worked for me, less headache. Gives you a reason to check the mail.
Haven't ordered form Kevin, but did talk to him about a stock once. Nice guy.

hi guys i called Midway for a bolt head for a 308 they said they don't carry them anymore . I don't know about the .223 or mag. but that is what the girl said the computer told her about the 308 . T.R.

I purchased both 223 and 308 bolt face about three weeks ago and one was back ordered but I got it in about a week after the first one showed up. The only problem with Midway is that you hve to payshipping twice if the item is back ordored.

This is the one you need if you have a left port.

I've checked, looking for a .223 bolt head myself. I've had one on order with SSS since 1/15 and still waiting. The BH is the only thing holding up my 1/7tw build. Brownells doesn't have any at the moment except LH and magnum. Savage will flat out NOT sell to the public, even FFL holders so I don't know where SSS, Brownells and formerly Midway was/is getting theirs.

One reason it's so hard to get through to SSS is their one and only phone number is also their fax line.
