Savage bolt handle threading

For those of you looking to have factory Savage bolt handles threaded as I've looked and had a hard time finding anyone to do it and finally found someone. I had a couple of bolt handles threaded for the older Savage 112/110 series of rifles. Charlie Lentz out of PA did them for me.

I don't like any of the aftermarket handles that are out there and wanted to use the factory handle with me having the option of using the knob of my choice.

Charlie did a great job! Attached are a couple of pictures. One has the larger Badger Ordnance knob (on my sons .223 rifle) and the other one has the mini Badger knob.

Can you give information on pricing ? Also does he provide the knobs of just the thread service ? Thanks, John.

$65 and that included return shipping for threading only. I don't know if he has knobs off hand. I'm going to say no. I supplied my own Badger knobs.

He can thread it a couple of different ways. One is he will turn a small portion on the narrow part of the handle after the taper so he can indicate the handle in correctly. I asked him to indicate it in as close as possible and thread it so the knob matches up with the radius and don’t touch the narrow part of the handle. That way the handle and knob all flow together nicely. Again he did a pretty nice job for me. I'll post a picture later of the other way he does it as well.

Here is the pic of another bolt handle he did for me. He had more of a shoulder on it where the knob met the handle but I cut it back. He also offered to finish it for me but told him not to worry about it. I would polish it and either get it cerakoted or blued.

That is a nice job considering what he has to work with. Some of those cast handles can be a real pain to work with. Looks like he has it down.:)

Thanks Frank!

No voids in either handle. Seems like the older small knob steel handles are best quality. The stainless large knobs are notorious for a void deep down.

He sent me a picture of his fixture for holding the handles (no I won’t post a picture of his fixture as he spent the time making it and figuring it out etc...). I don’t have the time to make a fixture let alone trying to get into a open machine.

Yes him and I talked and I do know with the handles being cast can have voids. Same as Remmy’s. We’ve done plenty of Remmy’s at the shop and I’ll say about 90% of those have voids.

I’m glad Chuck seems to think the earlier handles for the Savages seem to be better. I’ve got another one for him to do.

I did my 110 a couple years ago and had to make my own fixture. Turning the bolt handle was a breeze once I designed and machined the fixture. Here's a picture of my fixture. 20180830_115802.jpg
