savage barrel question new barrel install

Hi
a question for barrel Machineing
I have 1 1/4 barrel blank to put on a model 12 savage. The inside diameter of the recoil lug is 1 1/8 which means upon cutting the barrel tennon there will be only be a 1/16 of shoulder all the way around will this be enough shoulder to put this together?
This is converting from a barrel nut to a shoulder type of assemble
Thx for the help!!

Since no one else has answered Your question, I will give it a shot. The tennon will be 1.060” going through the recoil lug and into the action threads. The shoulder will set flush on the front face of the recoil lug and can be the full 1 1/4” if You like, and can fit it into Your stock.

If I were doing this, I would make sure the action face is square or have it trued. And definitely go with a precision ground recoil lug.

Best of luck, and please let us know how it works out.

There are actually Two barrel shank sizes that may apply to the model 12 Savage as they are / have been fitted for both Large and what is considered as small / standard.

A Large shank barrel will have 1.120" diameter x 20tpi.
A small / standard barrel will have 1.055" diameter x 20tpi

You mentioned in your post " The inside diameter of the recoil lug is 1 1/8" (1.125) which would indicate that your action is set up for a Large shank barrel.
I have a 6mm Norma BR that has a 1.255 diameter barrel at the chamber end and is set up as you are speaking of, with a 1/16th inch (0.0625) shoulder all the way around, and the rifle shoots outstanding. - The action is torqued to 55 foot-pounds of torque using a good quality torque wrench. -

As was recommended by @Rat Rifle, I'd make sure the action face is square or have it trued. And definitely go with a precision ground recoil lug. - And I believe you'll be in good shape.

^^ Please forgive Me, but I don’t understand the 1/16” - .0625” dimension?

As I stated above, the shoulder should set on the “front” face of the recoil lug. The barrel can be as thick as You want it as long as You can make it fit into Your stock barrel channel.

Or, are You trying to achieve a shoulder and still use the barrel nut ?

Some target actions, like the Bat “B” don’t use a recoil lug, eliminating that stacked tolerance.

Help Me here :(

Not a problem. It's done quite often, and I do it myself. Just
recently did my SA284 cat. Shouldered a 1,250 Brux on a 12
precision action.

Fuj, I’ve read Your posts from way back, and I know You know of which You speak.

BTW, I think that 284 You are working up is a great idea :)

Thank you Sir !! That SA284 came along in good order
and why I shouldered one up. The newest 284 cat of mine
is a work in progress, on a nut Job fire forming barrel. Once
I get it figured out, it will get shouldered.

Sorry LA. I messed up and left out the zero.

What I am not understanding is why a 1/16” shoulder when starting out with a 1.250” barrel chamber end ?

Thanks … RR
