Savage Barrel Nut or Not

Savage rifle accuracy is as good or better than any factory Remington rifle out the today. Barrel nut or not. The question too me would be, do you want to switch barrel the rifle ? Is it a job you can do yourself with a nut wrench and barrel vise ? Or is it an aesthetics thing ? I have replaced barrels on some of my savage actions not using the barrel nut and I prefer it over the barrel nut. For swapping out barrels very quickly, too me, the barrel nut is the way to go. Either way, the accuracy is equal using both methods. Many guys use Remington actions while incorporating the re mage systems( Remington action with barrel nuts).

If you do not use the barrel nut AND change bolt heads , you MAY have headspace issues .
You really cannot use a savage barrel WITHOUT the barrel nut. I suppose it could be done by a gunsmith after modifications are done to the barrel. If you have another barrel cut and contoured to fit the savage action and design it to work without the nut, yes, have a gunsmith set up headspace.

Ask yourself have you ever seen a ugly winner ? lol
I sure have seen plenty of pretty losers .
lol .
Always seem to back it not the arrow but it's the Indian Many times it aIndian shooting a savage. Larry
Can't say that I have but those barrels nuts are not aesthetically pleasing. All of my savage actions with new barrels do not have the barrel nut. It's not an accuracy issue just personal preference as I do not like the barrel nut look. A buddy of mine has a 10T with the smooth not. Just looks like a step up from the barrel and smooth like the barrel. That I do like. I do have a couple switch barrels that do still have the nut only because it's only a swap and headspacing job away from a different caliber. That's the biggest benefit too me.

One barrel 4 different actions . Works
Smooth nut look good also .
I shoot a large Shank actions.
I don't think a 1.250 barrel Gives enough shoulder on the lug . 1 .300 barrels aren't common Larry

I have savage rifles with and without a barrel nut. I chose not to use a barrel nut on my straight 284 since I was using a 1.25" bull barrel didn't want to step the barrel down in order to use a nut.. If I'm not mistaken, CBI has designed a special barrel nut and now sell a 1.25" bull with a barrel nut for large shank actions. I can't really compare the nut vs no nut since I have a two different barrel manufacturers on those rifles, however, my Bartlein with no nut shoots the best.

The best shooting gun I have is a savage large shank action re work bolt along with a deleated ejector hole bolt head. Timed barrel
Not bedded stock but on pillars
And a reworked red blade trigger .
Special made 1.310 nut

Blonde,brunette,redhead....

As the owner of some stupid accurate"nut jobs"....I see it both ways.Meaning,if it's a straight up killing machine (redhead?)....just don't give a rip about jam nuts, cause more than likely it's gonna be painted in camo du jour.

And I don't care what anyone says, dragging a pure hunting rig around WILL beat the snot out of it.....

Savage....I know you're pretty hooked up on racing so take this as a good hearted joke but,

I've got some total POS 110 rigs that will put you on the trailer....haha.Just sayin. We're an Ohlin's shop.Think stupid fast sportbikes...shock dynos, yadayada.

centershot, I have a Benchmark barrel 1-8 twist, 26" chambered in .223 using a nut for ftr shooting. 75 Amax, 300 yards I shoot HM scores with it and 600 I'm capable shooting upper MA scores HM. I do not believe the nut is holding me back at all. If anything it would have to be either a little heavier bullet in this barrel or a 1-7 with heavies. Go with the nut. I own enough Savage's with nuts, change barrels my self, I've lost count.... never had a nut come loose.

if I had my rathers on a savage it would be without the nut, if you get your gunsmith to cut all your barrels the same, 5 minutes and your done without the nut, if your using a dedicated action
