Savage Axis

I have read reports on the internet that the Axis shoots extremely well out of the box. With this being the low end rifle in the Savage line I am curious to hear from hunters that actually know what an accurate rifle is. Most of the reports have been from the 1-2 deer a year type hunters. So their idea of accurate is different form what the shooters on this forum would consider accurate.

anyone here own one or have any experience with this model from Savage?

Friend bought one. He lives in Pa. and I now live in Florida. He never asked me about one until after buying.

Well he tried to shoot it off a bench and literally gave up due to the trigger. For the money and effort it would take to replace that trigger, he has now figured he could have bought a "good" rifle.

Gave up on it quickly and is now having trouble getting much in trade on something else.

Savage site is your friend for this one, they even have a forum just axis/edge. Seems they are accurate like any other savage BUT the triggers are noting exciting & they do require some extra work. For all you have to do Id just get a wallymart Savage M10/11, M110/111 package gun with the accutrigger for a few $$ more.

Son got a .243 Axis and was shooting in the .3s at 100 off the bench with it using Hornady 100Gr BTSP and RL22. I cannot give an opinion on the trigger because I have not shot it. He did not complain about the trigger but he is a Marine and does not complain about such things. He was happy to get it and seems very pleased with it. I hope to see him take a deer with it this season.

We bought an AXIS in .243 for our daughter's first youth hunt. She was shooting 2" at .75 yards which isn't bad considering she had never been behind a rifle before. Was completely surprised when I got a turn. Out of the box, with the factory Weaver Scope and mount, I could do 1" or less at 100 yds. This is from a $300 RIFLE? I'm very pleased with our purchase and will keep it for my use as well. That is the upside. The downside is that the whole set-up feels and looks cheap. No way around that....
As an aside, the scope was supposed to be bore sighted. HA!!! It took nine rounds just to get it on paper. We'll see how well it holds zero at the next range visit.

I own a couple axis rifles. One is the axis II, which means it has an accutrigger from the factory. I put a timney trigger on the other one. Both shoot very well, especially with handloads. Put an MDT chassis on one and a decent scope and it shoots way better than a $300 rifle should. I’m sure it would make more sense to build around a better action, but for someone on a very tight budget, you can still have a lot of fun shooting with your friends. Even long distance without breaking the bank. Plus you can put any savage small shank barrel on it. I know the saying “buy once, cry once”. But I’ve never regretted buying those two rifles, and probably never will. Enough rambling on, I have a soft spot for the axis in case you didn’t notice. But I like my Borden’s also.

A friend of mine has one in a 308. With reloads he's shooting about an inch at 100 yards off the bench. Considering the price, the poor trigger and the flex in the stock I think this is truly amazing. Since after market stocks and triggers are available and the down side risk is low (i.e. it's cheap) it might be the best bargain in the factory rifle offerings.

The stocks on these get more complaints from me than the triggers. There is just way to much flex in them. Even if you inlet the barrel channel a good amount you can almost count on the stock flexing enough to contact the barrel when shooting off shooting sticks or a bi-pod. They can be very accurate little rifles though even with horrible triggers.

It is the 2018 version of the Remington 788. Cheap, looking, long in tooth with zits, but the girl can party! It is a 300 dollar meat getter that will shoot better than 90% of the people who buy them in Walmart will ever be able to shoot it. Is it an AS gun? No. But it is worth $300 to bang around, pun intended.
