Savage Arms Stevens 334 TECH NOTE

A friend purchased a Savage Arms Stevens 334, I got to re-barrel for him yesterday. These rifles are made in Italy and are very low priced (Around $460.00). The actions themselves appear to be OUTSTANDING for custom builds, very nice indeed. The triggers are HORRIBLE but can be worked down to a nice 1.5lbs The factory barrels are MICRO rifled not sure how accurate they will be, but the actions are worth the money IMHO.

FYI: they come with STEEL scope rails.

Tech Note:

These rifles have GREEN lock tight on the threads and need to be heated to remove. Heat the barrel not the receiver. Even heating these barrels you are still going to need a SERIOUS vise and pull bar to break them free. These are on tighter than the Weatherby Vanguard barrels! Tightest barrel I have ever dealt with, took two guys and a 4 foot extension to get it to break free, but we did not realize that green lock tight was used until we removed it. Now YOU know

Why would anyone ever lock tight a barrel, just shaking my head.

Very nice smooth action, One of the best Savage actions I have handled.
Swept bolt handle
Steel scope rail
Side safety

Con's
Barrel very tough to remove
Micro groove rifling
Trigger is very bad from factory
Factory after market part availability non existent at this time

Well it LOOKS decent, except maybe the safety but I'd bet it works well with gloves on when hunting.
