SAVAGE ACTIONS

1911cwp

You don't know what you don't know.
I was hoping someone could tell me the significance of long shank, short shank on savage actions. I guess there are also different patterns where the screws line up for the stock?

I have never heard of long shank short shank, only large and small shanks. there are three different bolt patterns. the older short action has a hole spacing of 4.270 which are the actions that the magazine box stays on the action when removed from the stock. then there are the newer short action with DBMS which are spaced 4.40. then there are the long actions such as 110, 116, etc. which I don't remember the #s for.hope this helps.

Savage has small shank actions, and large/target shank actions.

Some of your larger magnum rifles have the large shank.

The Savage Target actions all are large/target shanks.

Very little difference between the two. The dual ports mostly use the 3.44 screw spacing and the others use 4.40.

The other actions that are feed from the center are usually 4.27 spacing.

I personally use the Target Actions on all my match rifles, but the others do just as well. I have a 338 Edge on a small shank action which was originally a 7mm Mag rifle. I have no problems. Why the 7mm long action is made with a small shank, well I can't explain this to this day.

Savage Thread Specs:
Target Savage - 1.115-20 TPI (1.400 Long +/- .020)
Standard Savage - 1.060-20 TPI (1.600 Long +/- .020)

I understand "some" people have tapped the standard action up to the Target Action specs. Get the target action barrel nut and a large/target action barrel, and your ready to go. Make sure you have the right size boltface.

I have 6mm's & 308's on small actions that are just as accurate as anything I have on large shanks.

I don't have an answer as to why Savage has two different sizes.

Maybe someone can explain this, Dennis

Thank you both very much. I read about these things in posts of others but never have understood them. This clears it up alittle for me. Sometimes I consider building something myself or getting either a MODEL 12 F/TR and have it changed to a .260 Remington. Or, find a MODEL 12 Palma and have it converted to .260.

DennisH has this right. However 'll add this:
RBLP also uses 3.44 spacing, as well as the dual ports. I have seen this to be correct when buying a complete rifle. e.g. LRPV using 3.44.
However, should you purchase an action (target) only from Savage I have found that the 4.40 spacing is used. There doesn't seem to be any serial number cut off to determine this. ( you may read that after Gxxxx it changes) but this is not so. I have two (Sav SKU# 18182) both with ser #'s H or higher and they use 4.40 spacing.
I would want the action and a ruler in my hand before ordering a stock.
