Savage action

Thinking of building a 600yd rifle with a Savage action right bolt left port. Any opinions on the action, or should a guy just spend the $ on a Predator or BATT?

You are comparing apples to oranges. Savage actions will get you there with some work, skill, and luck. It is like driving a chevrolet Impala vs a Corvette. You can spend your money up front or down the road. Some people want to shoot and are on a budget. Should they be penalized for wanting to shoot with what they have? Would BR be better served subdivided in Classes:

A. Custom or Prototypes guns,

B. Modified Factory Guns,

C. Factory Guns

Now we have Light, Heavy, factory classes.

It is starting to sound like racing.

Go over to savageshooters.com and ask that same question and see what they say. They are a good honest bunch over there.
A lot of people will tell you that you need expensive equipment to be good. Try it and see how you like it. Every thing I have heard is that these actions are very good.

All I know is I wan't one too. Thinking of building a 6mm Dasher, right bold left port would be a pain in prone position huh. I might go right, right.

I bought one of Savage's new Target Actions this spring and gave it to my gunsmith for a barreling job. He checked the action out and told me it needed no trueing! It was ready to go straight from Savage. I had a Kreiger 1 in 8.5 twist barrel installed in 6.5/284 .285 neck .100 freebore to shoot the 140 JLK bullets and am very satisfyed with the results. One thing lacking is a good trigger. The 6 oz. acutrigger is not exactly what I like.It changes feel from shot to shot.Maybe with someone who really knows how to tune one it may get better. I'm gonna try a rifle basics trigger and see how that works. Will keep you posted. Hope this helps ,John

John, I have an older Savage,2 years old) with accutrigger that was rebarreled a year ago to 6BR. Shoots really well. I installed the Rifle Basix 2 trigger and it, too, was the right move. Installation was drop-in,well, pull pins, arrange pins, install pins and spring) that took me 15 minutes. The trigger came with a good DVD showing up close details of the installation.

JB:
Bruno's had the Savage actions listed for sale at around $400.00. They said they had all 4 types ie: small bolt face and 308 size and right bolt/rt port and rt bolt/lft port.

Thanks Hipshot, maybe I'll give the rifle basics a try.Gotta be better than a trigger that doesn't repeat itself,ie) same feel each shot.

Savage advertizes that the new accutrigger adjust down to 6 oz. Maybe so but set that low and each time you close the bolt it trips the the sear and you have to open the bolt and close it to recock. That is a pain especially if you are running short on time and have to get your shots off now.
I love my Savage action, right bolt left port. Even with the flaw in the trigger I'm able to get groups under 1/4" at 200 yards.

I made mine a right bolt/left port/right eject.... the trigger could use some help, but all in all I'm well pleased with it.

sully,

I just went thru this to. I wanted to build my own rifle for local benchrest action, small "b",, some ppl get sensitive about that). Many naysayers. I have a Shilen barrel, target action timed and trued by Fred, and a SSS stock. Entered my first score match yesterday and won. Looks to be a low 2 rifle at the moment, but has printed some high 1's w/o much time tuning. I think when I get better with the flags and have more time on the loads, it will only get better. It has already exceeded my expectations.

If you are 'gutting' the action anyways, consider the Stevens actions. Same thing, way less money, approx $150 once all parts are sold off).

I use these actions to build all my LR and F class rifles. They have worked very well for me right out of the box. That floating head does wonders for lining up and taking care of the cases under some very toasty pressures.

I have used both standard Rem type install as well as the barrel nut. Both do the same thing as far as accuracy goes.

I have swapped barrels between actions and had the identical results re: accuracy/brass life. That is pretty amazing for a do it yourself install job.

The big downside is bolt lift which DOES need some tuning. Fred can do it but with a bit of time and a Dremel, great improvements can be had.

My favorite trigger is a Rifle Basix 2 set as light as I can go. Ballpark around 4 to 6ozs. Can't get as light as a 2oz jewel but pretty darn close and light enough for me. Just keep an eye on sear to trigger release engagement. Differences in material thickness could leave you with little/no contact.

I had to add a spot of weld for one rifle to get it working properly. That is the only real area of QC that I see varying in these actions.

I want a RBRP action for F class, so the good ole action from the factory works for me. With a match barrel properly installed, I don't see giving up anything to the custom actioned rifles I shoot against.

I’ve got 2 Savage Target actions w/ Rifle-Basix model SAV-2 triggers installed. One my wife shoots in 223AI setting in a McMillan is a true tack driver, excellent shooting rifle.

My other Savage set up in another McMillan MBR shooting 280AI, 308 and 30-06AI is a down right hammer. Both actions were worked by Gre’ Tan and both are amazing for what they are.

Better out there yes, more accurate no.

Like everything else, it cost to play, some more some less.

I built a 6 BR with a savage target action, Shilen barrel and Savages F- class stock for about $1500 a few years ago, made High Master with it with the factory trigger. Just ordered a new barrel. Good luck, enjoy the game.

Mack Bros action $675
Revolution benchrest stock with bedding block $549
Bat trigger guard and action screw set $82
Prefit barrel $289
Nut $39
Triggertech Diamond Trigger $299

That $1933.

Assemble and shoot. I have one customer that was leading the Colorado state championships in benchrest with his 6xc with this configuration except he was using a bone stock Rem 700 action.

The only (IMHO) reason Savage is on the back burner is because of the Remington/ "clone" indoctrination. If it "isn't" a Remington or more expensive clone, it's CRAP!!
Look at the "winners lists", That's what gets folks to go Remington o clone.
If it isn't on THE LIST, it's not worth getting involved with.
Somebody wants to play "competion" so they play Savage. May beat the pants off of a few other guys (and at 1/4 the price) but nobody talks about that.
The above quote shows you it CAN be done.:cool:

That reminds me of Guys going out with a Remington XP 100 bolt action pistols and beating the pants off the rifle shooters.:cool: (say it isn't so)
It's your $$$$, spend it where YOU want.
That's like "you go to your church and I'll go to mine but we'll all walk along together". :)
