savage 6br build need help

I am planning on building a 6br that i can use for varmint hunting out to 300 yards or more.
i will be using a remington model 700 action or savage action whichever i can get a better price on.

undecided on the barrel

stock is from boydsstocks

as a newbie to the 6br i am wanting to be able to just order the brass, bullets etc, reload them and be able to shoot.
so when ordering a barrell can i just get it in 6br with no turn neck?

also i would like to use the gun as a repeater so i need full function of the magazine is this possible? i am wanting to spend around 700-800 dollars gun complete without optics if possible.

Gimpy, try a pre threaded/ chambered bbl from E. Arthur Brown company. they are for savage actions and @$259 are reasonable. That plus a used savage action and boyds stock should fit your requirements. tarzan

I have used a PacNor to build my Savage 6 BR. Very accurate. Shilen offers prefits as does SSS in Douglas barrels, there are also Lothar Walther barrels. EA Brown has just started doing the Savage and is making barrels in house, not sure on accuracy or interior finish.

I have an SSS/Douglas 12 twist, no turn neck 6mmBR bbl on the rifle that I use in our club group BR matches. My 'competition' load is right off the home page of this site :). 80 gr bullet over 30 gr of Varget, .005 into the lands. I am using BR4 primers but for this load I don't think it matters too much.

I think the only problem with EABCO bbls is that they only offer the 8 twist. I think the 12 twist would be ideal for your needs. The 80 gr bullet will work fine out to 600 yds or more.

The first 3 fireforming groups out of this rifle went .4, .4 and .5. This was with 28 gr of Varget and 3 different seating depths. I then worked my way up to 30 gr with accuracy improving at every step. 30gr is still a very mild load.

Yes on all questions.. I've shot PacNor, and Douglas barrels. If shooting out to 300 is the goal go with a 14 twist heavy varmint contour of some kind. I prefer the PacNor because it's hand laped. But I also had a Douglas that shot better than anything I had ever dreamed of.
As far as magazine feed. Yep, we do it all the time. You may need to use some needle nosed pliers on the lips of the magazine, but it's no big deal.
Your no-turn neck would be the way to go for you as well. You wont have a problem finding it at all. It will be .272"...
As for the action. For me it's a no-brainer.,this is just me)
Go with the savage.. I have traded entire Remington rifles for savage actions. I would try to adjust the trigger myself, but I've done it alot and I'm not afraid of it. If I can't get it as light as I want it I would go with a Rifle Basix Savage II
after market trigger.
For brass it's Lapua, PERIOD.. If you want it consistent it's Lapua.

1.- Savage or Stevens action, they're the same action)
$200.00 - $250.00

2.- Pac-Nor, or Douglas barrel, 22" - 24" long..
$300.00 - $400.00

Go out and shoot one whole groups... Toot

Here is one now fron my savage site. You can't access the classified unless you're a member. But this is a beautiful gun as is.. Toot

Go with a Savage action. That way you can build it yourself.
With a 1-8 twist you can shoot just about anything.
.272 no turn neck! Lapua brass. Invest in a good barrel!!
Get it throated to the smallest bullet you plan to shoot.
Use a "dummy round". The "off the shelf" barrel will be throated the way "they" build them. Get it the way "you" want it!
You can't shoot short and long bullets from the same barrel and have good neck contact in the brass. I like my bullets seated to the shoulder neck junction.
As the throat wears you can seat the bullets farther out in the neck but still get good contact.
Shilen on a Savage 110V. Set up to shoot longer bullets.75 gr.+.
Pac Nor on a Savage 116. Up to 80 gr. with full neck contact.

The question that still reamins unanswered is the functioning of the 6mmBR case from the magazine.

Any experiences with the Savage and this cartridge loaded from the magazine?
