Savage 5r 308

I recently purshased a Savage 5r #19055 in 308 and have been in the process of barrel break in as I usually do. I have been loading 168 smk to a length of 2.80 for the initial shots and all is well and appears this rifle will be a shooter. Last night I took my sinclair tool for determining length of oal cartridge to the lands and after rechecking twice it seems that the 168 smk need to be loaded to 2.822. Doesn't that seem short for this bullet in a savage? Figure someone here might could let me know if that sounds normal. Thanks for your response in advance Huntrrr......

Have a Savage 10 FLCP-K and mine is 2.8065. SMK as far as lenght are all over the place. I now, since I got a comparator measure to the ogive instead of OAL. I too use the Sinclair tool.

Here are some comparisons from a few of my .308s. The first number is approximate OAL, the second is the Sinclair dimension. All with 168 Sierras.

Borden Palma reamer 2.759 2.025
Pierce Palma reamer 2.745 2.020
Steyr SSG 2.905 2.177
Savage 12F McGowen 2.883 2.157
