Savage 20 BR up and runnning and gunnin' for 1,000yd PDog=Pics and BS aplenty

Well alright then=
My Ole Salvage Split Port 6BR
told me a few months ago that
it was sick of all the fun the Rugermites
and Remchesters were making of the
4" = 200 yds groups it was shootin'=
so Ole VolDoc ordered a new Hart 20 cal
9 twist barrel and sent it off to Kevin Rayhill
of Stockade Gunworks fame and low and behold
"The Big Brown Truck " brought it Home
to Moonshine Mt. yesterday=
Ole VolDoc only had 3 pieces of Brass trimmed
and necked down so that's why the 3 shot groups=

Had a new bedding job done also so it will remain
Factory when I slap the 6BR Salvage Factory barrel
back on for the
BBB this Spring=

Don't look too BAD for a Salvage Split=

It's chambered for a no-turn 20 BR=
Just Barrel Break-in this AM=
but looks like it wants to shoot=

Muzzle Break is Kevin's own design and workmanship
is superb=

can't hardly discern the seam in good light=
and recoil and muzzle jump is Non-existent=

My Goal is to Kill a PrarieDog this year with this 20 cal
past 1,000yds=
55 Berger 20 cal bullet BC= almost .400
and velocity is near 3,8000fps= Dog Gone=

Over and Out from Moonshine Mt.
20 Cal Ballastic Lab=
Doc

PS= I bought this Ole Salvage at a yard sale that JRinKY told me about
one Saturday and I got the scope on a Blue-Light KMart closeout
that same weekend=
go figure=

Looks cool.

Any paticular reason the front ring is so far back?

If you run across anymore NF under the blue-light at :othe big K again, give me a call.

Hmmm...

20BR...

55 grain bullets...

calm winds @ 100 yards...

dogs out past 1,000 yards....

May the FORCE be with you!

Good shootin' & good luck!

First off. Thats a very nice looking firearm.

I have a few questions.

Is that Savages Benchrest stock? My girlfriend wants a model 12 benchrest. Is it comfy?

What do you have for a trigger?

Right now I'm shooting a model 12 LRPV in 204 ruger and when the barrel is burnt I'm going to get a 20cal 1:9 twist to shoot the 55gr bergers. How is the 204 ruger compaired to the 20br for shooting heazy bullets? I'm stuck between what I should chamber it in. Even tho i have a long time to think.

Kona

If you want to shoot the 55's the BR is the way to go. The 204R just ain't got the oomph to take advantage of the extra weight and BC that goes with it.

Nice gun Voldoc. Keep us appraised of your exploits.

Is that a factory stock or aftermarket? Your rifle looks really nice.I put 2 together ,one in .260 rem and one in 6mmremington.One is a varmint 26" tube and the 6mm is a bull in a bvss stock with a long action /centerfeed and the bvss accepted the bull barrel with only slight mod of the last couple inches of the forearm barrel channel.I cant wait to shoot it.I put a 3 screw in the .260 and an sss trigger in the 6mm.I got the sss from brownells in 2 days as I have never been able to get through to fred.

700-1100 yds on p-dogs is nothing out here, its the wind you have to deal with.
I think you may have a shooter...send it to me with 1k rounds and Ill ring it out to 1200 yds.

That one target I question the measure...Hole looks to be 2+ bullets wide that would be at least .408 wide less .204 giving group.204...No way in the .0 range...Still very good..LT

Looks like one heck of a varmint zapper. Glad someone is making use of that "heavy" .20 cal Berger bullet! Keep us posted...

voldoc02,
Nice rifle and nice groups, I am not sure it will be a 1K dog gun, maybe who knows? 700 probably for sure.Show us some 5 shot groups when you get her broke in and a load worked up.

Not too bad of a gun, but a puff of wind and those bullets will scatter like your shooting a scatter gun at 100 yds! Good luck on getting them to fly together past 400 yards, it will be a good challenge. Will be deadly short range if you can get it dialed in a lil better. Great pics . Good luck an post some results at 400 yds.

I think the guys talking about the wind blowing this around need to learn to use a ballistics calculator. You will have to use a cartridge with double the powder in a big 6,6.5 or 7mm cartridge to out do the 20br with a 55gr Berger. This cartridge will run right with a 6mm dasher out to 1000yds as far as drift goes but has about 4-5moa less drop. When your trying to hit prairie dogs at long ranges you really need a flat shooting cartridge. A judgement error of 50yds gets greatly exaggerated with a bigger slower bullet. Just keep your extreme spreads down and you will be fine.

rfurman24,
You put ten sots rapid fire in under 4" at a 1000 yards like the big boys do with there dashers and easily 5" on a regular basis and I will take the 6brx off my witchita and screw on a 20 br barrel, I shot beside Leo Anderson last weekend and he shot a 10 shot group of 4.692 inches and a 99 score the next day in 10+ mph switching winds he shot a 5.974 with another 99 score if your 20 br can do that I will be very impressed ;) show us some long range groups, your 100 yard barrel break in groups are very promising.

I am not trying to start a pissing match and am definitely not trying to steal the thread but you are talking about accuracy now. I do not know yet how the 800,900, or 1000yd accuracy for this cartridge is going to hold up but the ballistics run right with a dasher. I can't stand it when some one starts knocking small calibers in the wind, sometimes comparing them to lesser cartridges, without knowing the facts. If I were going to shoot 1000yd competition I would use a 7 saum or wsm but I will stick with my 20s for dogs. Nice rifle and groups to the OP.

I'll chime in here too,...... you would be shocked to see how mid size .20 cal cases will do with high B.C. 20 cal bullets. A 55 grain berger running 3600-3700 will flat surprise a dedicated 6mm BR shooter,... the downside is the 20 accomplishes this with relatively high velocities and likewise relatively poor barrel life. All things being equal,.. life is short,.... shoot an exotic when you can.
