Savage 17 Remington

Am going to have NSS do up a barrel for me.
Any input on what I should ask for or about on chambering.

I figure a short throat and then chase OAL as wear occurs. 1-9" twist looking at 25's and 30's mostly.

Zero free bore is what you want and if shooting colony varmints you will definitely want to try the 25 grain V-Max.For longer distance/some target work try the 30 Golds built on Todd Kindlers die set, they were bought by a good fella down in Texas named Montana Mize. His info is in the classifieds on Saubiers site.No dog in this hunt just think they are a nice bullet. As far as neck diameter.197 is a good one if you don’t mind neck turning, the ‘smith may have the ability to throat separately like Greg Tannel does,if so just add.002”to your turned dimension.Depends a bit on your purpose for this rifle, will it be used for calling on stand or a bit of pd bustin,or?Good luck with the 17R:)

Won't be a calling rifle as it is gonna be heavy.
Ordered today,1-9"'twist, stainless select match Shilen.

Should I call and specify no free bore?

I prefer not to turn necks. I would and probably will turn just a few as a clean up and knock high spots off to see if it does any good.

I have just a few 30's may a couple dozen. A pile of 25's.

Montana I think is taking orders again. He was down for a while. I think Reeds has some "heavies" also.

Yes I would definitely give a call and ask about the reamer specs,so you know what you are getting, the 17Rem has a relatively long neck so you would be fine with some freebore and the 30’s.A lot depends on which bullet you will shoot the most,I’m sure they will help you strike a good balance.

No free bore. Another 10-11 weeks and I should have it here if I am lucky.

Get a dummy round, measure the OD of the neck with bullet in it, add .002 or .003 and you won't need to turn any necks, not even to" knock the high spots off".
