17 Remington questions

Melvin

New to .17 caliber? Is .17 Remington brass available? I assume it is a standard chambering and not strictly wildcat?
Also saw a rifle for sale that had a 1:6 twist!? What weight bullet would require such a fast twist?
Looking for a varmint, coyote killer, and wondering how the .17 Rem would perform
Thanks
Melvin

A 1 in 6" twist .17 Rem was probably made to shoot Berger's 37 grain bullets.

The .17 Remington has been killing coyotes since it was introduced.

If you want to jump off the deep end, you can go over to the saubier.com forum and join the small caliber cult. :)

Regarding the 1:6 twist barrel, my thought would be that is a typo or very rare barrel.

From my experience with the 17 Rem, the 1-9 twist barrel that will stabilize the 30gr Kindler gold or other 30gr BT bullets is the way to go. Out to 400 yds, they are a quite good performer on woodchucks in my experience with them. I've only shot a couple of coyotes with the 17 Rem, the longest shot being approximately 250yds and I was more than impressed. Brass can be difficult to find from time to time, and is made by Remington and Norma that I know of. It's a very good varmint and predator cartridge IMHO. WD

Originally when Berger brought out the 37 grain bullet in 17 caliber it was thought that a 6 twist was needed to stabilize it.So perhaps this is an older custom build.A 7 twist in my experience is plenty to stabilize the 37,kind of a moot point since Berger stopped making them a while ago.If you get that rifle the twist may blow up the lighter bullets if you push them to hard.A 17 Rem really does shine with a 9 twist and any good 25 or 30 grain bullet.Called in coyotes are dead meat:)

In Todd Kindler's book "The Sensational Seventeens" He talks about K&P making a 6 1/2" Twist barrel for the 37 grain Berger bullet and thought a 1-6" twist might be better.

That's some seriously fast twist. Dunno if standard weight bullets will hold together at typical 17 Remington velocities. Might have to do some field experimentation.
