Savage .17 hornet help please! AI

I purchased a model 25 savage .17 hornet. Finally got a chance to shoot it and it was ok at best. Accuracy continued to get worse after frustration of missing a bunch of fox I sent it back to savage. They replaced the accu trigger and a bunch of washers from what I understand. They stated it would shoot a .4 inch group at 100 yards. I received the rifle back and it consistently shoots 2 bullets in the same hole(or really close to it) and then one a couple inches off at 100 yards. And the cycle repeats. It's on a lead sled and I have tried different scopes. Burned through about 100 bucks in ammo and another bit in bore cleaners and things hoping it would help with no success. Any help would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

First thing to do is "quit cleaning it"!! Give the barrel a chance to get "seasoned". Then, check to see if the barrel is free floated all the way down it's length.
Start there and see what happens. One small step at a time.;)

Thanks for he advice NorCalMikie. It has the laminate stock and 24 inch bull barrel. Barrel is definitely free floating the entire length. I paid a pretty penny for the gun and have a couple friends that have the same model. Serious tack drivers... Except mine. I want to get rid of it but I can't sell it to somebody. The guilt would kill me.

Have you had the stock off of it after you had it back from from savage? Is it pillar bedded, and what torque do torque the stock screws? And how does savage shoot a .4 @ 100yds and your not? What ammo did they get that group size with? Dont over think the small stuff.

The first thing I would suggest is to fire your friends rifles and confirm that the problem is not you. Then I would do as 16tpi suggests and check torque on action screws. I'm not familiar with this model of Savage--does it have pillars? Is the action bedded? You might also check to make sure that the bolt is not contacting the stock on closure. This happens sometimes with factory rifles and can cause accuracy problems. Just my thoughts,YMMV. dedogs

I had the same rifle, but the synthetic stock/shorter barrel. Almost exactly the same problem: a couple close shots, but then a 2" flyer. Mine was one of he first ones out, and many were plagued with burred-over muzzle crowns. Take a a Q-Tip, stick it just inside the barrel, and run it around the crown to see if any fibers are stuck to the sharp edge. Still under warranty, I sent mine back to Savage as it had feeding/extraction problems also. Came back a little better, but not much. Got out of the guilt thing when the dealer took it back on an almost-even trade for a .22 Hornet because (he claimed) he had a buyers waiting for them then who didn't care about accuracy - they just wanted to be first on the block with a new caliber (now they can't seem to give those Savage 25s in any caliber away).
I unloaded the laminated 22H (that showed some of the same flaws as its .17 cal. Model 25 brother) for a C-Z 527 first chance I got and couldn't be happier; the little .17 wasn't "gettin' it" here in groundhog country, anyway.
Sorry if this hasn't been much help.

Thanks for your help guys. I'm no gun expert by any means. Wouldn't even know how to tell if it is bedded or has pillars. I called savage this morning and am sending it back it. About 1 out of every 10 times working the action the firing pin will not re cock(hope I'm using the right terminology). Also noticed a small crack in the stock at the very rear of the barrel where the bolt slides in to the receiver. Could that be part of the problem? I'm sure it doesn't help. Checked for burs and didn't see anything unusual or have a q tip catch on anything. not sure about torque. I don't have a wrench to check it and it is tightened to whatever it came back from savage as. I should probably invest in one for situations like this.

Hey guys! Just following up so you know... I sent my gun back to savage (2nd time). They said they could not get it to group and the gunsmith could not fix it. Didn't state the reason why on the computer but man, I wish I knew. Anyway, they are sending me a new gun. Although it was frustrating going through all that I'm very impressed with their commitment to the customers especially since the gun is out of warranty. sure, it should have been fixed the first time but hey... Human error is something that will never be eliminated. I'll continue to buy savage

Everybody and business's make mistakes it's how they deal with it that counts in my book. Good for Savage
